With all of the excitement surrounding Android 2.0 (Éclair) in recent days, I was feeling a bit depressed wondering how long it may be before we see some Éclair action on the HTC Hero. As it turns out, the wait may not be too long. According to a response from a HTC European customer service representative, HTC is planning to bypass Android 1.6 (Donut) completely and skipping straight to Android 2.0 for the HTC Hero.
I’d take the news with a pinch of salt, especially as a customer rep isn’t the most reliable of sources, however it makes sense for the company to do this. Android 2.0 is already out so why duplicate the workload? Remember as HTC has customized the Android firmware with its Sense UI, there’s no OTA updates like you get with the T-Mobile G1 (that is a ‘Google Experience’ handset). Therefore, HTC has to adapt each firmware release before passing it on to Hero users.
Dear HTC customer,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
The Hero will not be receiving the Android 1.6 upgrade, it will however get the 2.0 one. Do note however that we do not have a confirmed release date for this upgrade, all I can recommend at the moment is that you keep yourself updated by visiting our website regularly as the latest information will be available to view from there.
