The big question that all HTC Hero owners worldwide are asking themselves is when can they expect to see the Android 2.0 (Eclair) update. As all HTC Hero phones are on Android 1.5 (Cupcake), the jump to Eclair is a big one and is much anticipated. We now have an idea of what to expect as Sprint has confirmed that it will release some time in 1H 2010. Here’s the tweet in full:
“Happy to announce Android 2.0 is coming to Sprint’s Hero & Moment. Date TBD, but roughly 1H 2010. “
On the positive side, it’s nice to have a firm indication as to when the update will hit, but on the negative side, the “1H 2010” timeline suggests it won’t be released during the first quarter of next year. However, Sprint may just be allowing itself some wriggle room with the launch date and hence the vague date.
Let’s be clear though, we are likely to see HTC releasing the Android 2.0/2.1 update at some time before this. Once released, carriers who have branded the phone (like Sprint in the US and T-Mobile & Orange in the UK) will take additional time to release their version of the update. So all those of you with unbranded GSM HTC Hero’s fear not, you’ll probably get the update significantly sooner.
