Google Maps Navigation hits UK

Google Maps NavigationGoogle has finally made available its turn-by-turn Google Maps Navigation (with voice directions) from today. Up until now it has only been available in the United States, so today’s release will hopefully see Google Maps Navigation release across other European regions shortly too.

Whilst initially only for Android 2.0+ devices, Google has also made Navigation available to those with Android 1.6 smartphones too. Not that it helps us HTC Hero owners stuck on Android 1.5. We’ll need to wait for the Android 2.1 update, but at least it’s another significant reason to wait.

Oh dear…as exciting as the arrival of google maps navigation coming to the UK is, it is overshadowed by the fact that it now appears that the upgrade to android 2.1 for the Hero has been delayed further – see Techradar link:

So apparently we’ve now got to wait until JUNE!!!!!!!
The Hero is currently one of a few, if not the only? android phone left on 1.5 (many older handsets have upgraded to 1.6 which provides access to more apps and features – including google maps navigation….). If it looked like the upgrade to 2.1 was going to take this long HTC should have given an intermediate upgrade to 1.6 in the meantime. I can’t believe that skinning the OS with HTC sense can cause such delays.

I’ve waited and waited, but that is it, I’m going to root my Hero now.

Numerous calls to Orange have resulted in not one person helping me.

Love my Hero, but feel dfrustrated and ignored.

Ok. Now I’m pst. I love android and my hero. Bought it specially direct, not from any network to be first in queue. Nearly year now, my contract will end and I haven’t got an update. Looks like my next phone will be something different.
