Euro HTC Hero Android 2.1 release imminent? Smaller OTA update released

by Hero on June 15, 2010

in Firmware

HTC HeroHTC have always commented that it will release a small ROM update for the HTC Hero before we see the much-awaited Android 2.1 release. Well according to the support pages, HTC has released a “Firmware over-the-air (FOTA) client update & YouTube player Update” that should be hitting Hero handsets right now.

This could mean that the Android 2.1 release is imminent, well the company only has two weeks left if it wants to meet its June 2010 deadline. I’ve not seen the update so far on my Hero, has anyone else had any luck?

Thanks Rajpal!

2 Martin June 15, 2010 at 6:14 PM

No update in Denmark yet.

3 Gerard June 15, 2010 at 6:19 PM

No update so far in Spain either.

4 Kyle June 15, 2010 at 6:20 PM

Mine’s unlocked, does that matter? Not getting it yet

5 Natasha June 15, 2010 at 6:20 PM

Nopee, not on mine in the UK yet!

6 António Lopes June 15, 2010 at 6:21 PM

Not on mine (Portugal).

7 Ivars June 15, 2010 at 6:22 PM

not here either, Ireland

8 B. June 15, 2010 at 6:23 PM

You have to change your date on your here to July or August, then the OTA will be there immediately. Worked for me (the Netherlands)

9 Matthew June 15, 2010 at 6:25 PM

Mines unlocked as well, bought handset only, how do you check?

10 Zoe June 15, 2010 at 6:25 PM

I’ve not had a update for my sim-free Hero since September last year!! I’m thinking of swapping to an iPhone, this just isn’t good enough, espcially when it has so many gripes!

11 B. June 15, 2010 at 6:26 PM

I mean Hero, not here..

12 Mahfooz June 15, 2010 at 6:32 PM

No update here in the UK. @B Do you know anyone else who got the update by changing the date?

13 Klaus June 15, 2010 at 6:33 PM

I’m en Denmark, with a non-rooted Hero, and I have seen shit… Pardon my french…

14 Dave June 15, 2010 at 6:35 PM

I’m on T-mobile UK and after changing the date to August 15th (just randomly flicked the month on in the settings) and restarting the phone, it’s currently downloading an update.
Everyone should try this, i promise it works so thanks to B for posting that tip.

15 Hero June 15, 2010 at 6:35 PM

I got the update in Switzerland.

16 Kiyoshi June 15, 2010 at 6:36 PM

Change your datetime to 2011, it should work immediately :)

17 Brad June 15, 2010 at 6:37 PM

@Dave – how will this affect the phone when you change it back to the real date…?

18 Dave June 15, 2010 at 6:42 PM

I turned the phone back on, went back to the settings to change the time and date to ‘auto’ and before i could tick the box i got pop up window advising me about the update and asking if i wanted to download.
Its just over 50% done now, so can’t comment on the differences.
Give it a go, the worst that will happen is you will get no update and have to turn the date back, but you should get the download.
Hope that helps.

19 Romain June 15, 2010 at 6:43 PM

Hi, i’m in Luxembourg, and after changing the date (15.08.2010) the update came immediately. Worked for me.

20 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 6:44 PM

Nothing here in the UK yet!
To be honest Im fed up wth HTC, love android and dont want to change it but my next contract will be on Samsung or Motorela. I just read an article saying HTC is the one controling the updates and will not issue the 2.2 and not even in the agenda!

21 Shane June 15, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Worked when i changed the date as suggested.

22 Brad June 15, 2010 at 6:48 PM

@ zaid..hero isnt meant to get the 2.2 update i dont think it will.. but the 2.2 release date is about augustish time i think.. for desire legend etc.

@Dave – true.. might just have to give it ago.. been waiting that long – although im dedicated to android.. and htc im afraid to say – as i highly dislike samsung and motorola’s gui add-ons…after HTC’s Sense UI… all the UI extras from companies went severly down hill…

23 neil mccomb June 15, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Nothing for me in the UK. Did the trick above. Changed date to 2011, turned off and on, and nothing happened. Have since corrected the date and still nothing. Not to bothered. Am sure it will come at some point tonight.

24 Jackie June 15, 2010 at 6:50 PM

I’m in Canada with a Polish model (that I bought before moving)
Did the date change and I got the update. Thanks guys! =)

25 Mez Solanki June 15, 2010 at 6:54 PM

Changing the date to 15 AUG worked for me, its updating now
Im in the UK with a unlocked Hero on Orange

26 cam June 15, 2010 at 6:56 PM

i changed to date to 15.06.2011 and got an update anounced. I’ve a t-mobile de branded hero on german t-mobile net.

27 Matthew June 15, 2010 at 6:58 PM

the 15th aug, off then on didnt work. changing to 2011 did.

28 Martin June 15, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I tried changing dates back and forth and in the end, 15.06.2011 worked. I guess it’s a bit random… we just need to get the phone to trigger an update check.

29 Brad June 15, 2010 at 6:58 PM

just restarted… awaiting for update now… been about 5 minutes nothing as of yet…

30 hsr84 June 15, 2010 at 7:01 PM

I had some kind of Android market icon appear in my notifications, when I clicked on it,nothing happened though. Was that it? It said ’1 update’,just as fast as it appeared,it was gone

31 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:02 PM

only difference i had was a low on space… then that disappeared…

32 jneill June 15, 2010 at 7:09 PM

Did the 2011 date
change and the mini update is downloading now. Let’s hope they bring on the full 2.1 asap…

33 Liviu June 15, 2010 at 7:11 PM

@Brad go to settings>about phone. Here you will see something new: System Software Update.

34 Martin June 15, 2010 at 7:12 PM

I’m updated. The version matches what is described at (2.73.405.93).

Changes in “Settings”: The firmware download options under “Security” is now gone. However, “System software updates” is now available under “About phone”.

Bring on 2.1 :)

35 Michael June 15, 2010 at 7:17 PM

the trick with the change of date to 2011 works on my G2 (german t-mobile hero) too

36 Klas June 15, 2010 at 7:19 PM

Changed year to 2011, got the update in Sweden.

37 Hamish Walker June 15, 2010 at 7:20 PM

OMG, I thought you were joking about changing the date, but it really worked! I changed to August 2011 and immediately got a notice asking if I wanted to update.

38 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:23 PM

Right after i had restrated the system date had returned ( no automatic date wasnt clicked ;D) – but i set it to december this year.. restarted got the update…updated it turned the phone off and ive now gota picture on a black background
which is a white traingle with an orange exclamation mark in the middle and underneath it is a phone…

is this standard? =/

39 Matthew June 15, 2010 at 7:24 PM

I tried the date thing, got a notification about the update, the phone turned off and a bar started filling across the screen then it stopped and a ! popped up, had to take the battery out ….. :(

40 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:25 PM

@Matthew – i got the same but im not taking the battery out…

is this an incompatibility with my phone?… surely not – i have the same as others? T-Mobile contract UK.

41 steve June 15, 2010 at 7:26 PM

did the update by changing date and it seemed to work. Now have option for “System software updates” as Martin says. Though still have old build number (2.723.111.91)

T-M UK version here

42 Matthew June 15, 2010 at 7:27 PM

Im T mobile uk aswell, everything just went back to the way it was before i did anything so no damage done but bit annoying.

43 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:28 PM

that is annoying… as i have no clue whether we can apply for the FOTA to be ‘resent’ as it were…

44 Matthew June 15, 2010 at 7:29 PM

Done it a few times now and its the same everytime.

45 Hamish Walker June 15, 2010 at 7:32 PM

Well, I changed the date, the update appeared and I clicked to download and then install, the phone rebooted and came back with a black screen, white triangle with yellow exclamation mark and phone lying beside it. I thought that this was not good. I found that some where you can enter the command line/terminal by pressing home and power and did so, i then got into a linux style menu system, and was offered reboot, did so and now back. Can’t tell if it is different……

46 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:34 PM

@Hamish – look up above in earlier comments – it states the firmware version will be different. and a amenu name will be different… hopefully ill get offered to update again and will go into the linux cmdline…

47 Ben June 15, 2010 at 7:36 PM

I have tried changing the date…but nothing yet. Any ideas people? I would very much like this update!

48 June 15, 2010 at 7:36 PM

Worked in Ireland. I’m on meteor. Just moved the month to July. Its now a full update I’m still on 1.5 but there is a new option to check for “system software update” under settings, about phone. Top of screen.

49 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:38 PM

no such luck.. moved date forward to 30december 2011… restarting now seeing if i can regenerate the download update option…

50 jobi June 15, 2010 at 7:38 PM

The German website androidpit announced the 2.1 update to hit the Hero on the 18th. As friday seems to be a usual day for such updates, we may get the full update this friday.

51 Hamish Walker June 15, 2010 at 7:39 PM

I have tried again with the date thing, again offered to update, gets halfway thru a progress bar and goes to the triangle thing. Again, home and power, command line and reboot. No different. Still on old ROM.
TMOBILE will have some questions to answer!
If you are on G2 Touch with TMOBILE then find them on twitter @TmobileUKhelp and hassle them!
I will be.

52 davefitzs June 15, 2010 at 7:39 PM

sorry I meant “not a full update” not its now a full update. Doggy typing finger.

53 KucKeeeJ June 15, 2010 at 7:40 PM

first update installed but still on 1.5 and “system software update” said that my phone is up to date.. any help how to continue after first update?

54 Theo June 15, 2010 at 7:40 PM

yep, got preparing update by setting to August 2010 in CH !

55 Mimi June 15, 2010 at 7:40 PM

Hi, I am from germany and after changing the date I also got the update immediately. Thank you!

56 shk June 15, 2010 at 7:41 PM

live in canada and the changing dates didnt work.. went to 2011, july, august, and october.. and i got nothing… maybe i shud just wait

57 Kim June 15, 2010 at 7:41 PM

I’m in Luxembourg. Changing the date to 15.08.2010 worked for me. I got the PreUpdate.

58 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 7:42 PM

Just change the month to 8 and year to 2011 and keep the day to 15th, u will get the download straight away (UK). Just done it and installed it.
I got the new Software Update check in the setting now, Build no: not similar to what it says in HTC support website. I cant see anything else new for now, but hope we get the 2.1 update soon :)

59 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:43 PM

@shk – i think this is the European version being released – are you not on sprint – as theirs was also released before ours… and taiwan before that…

60 chris June 15, 2010 at 7:44 PM

I change the date to Aug, 2011 whatever but it automatically changes back despite me taking ‘Automatic’ off. What’s happening?

61 Edwin June 15, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Update in the Netherlands, just received mine.

62 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:45 PM

@Zaid – no ‘Software Update Check’ option … but build number is CL#69351 release-keys

still after chanaigng update – am unable to get update again….

63 Ben June 15, 2010 at 7:50 PM

I tried that – 15/08/2011 – restarted my phone and still nothing. Any ideas? Does it matter if I am connected to Wi-fi? I am at home and always connect my phone to wifi when at home.
Would this make any difference to me getting it?
Any other ideas?!

64 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 7:52 PM

@Brad – Well I got the ‘System Software Update’, if you go to Setting > About Phone, its the first thing (top of the list). However, yes I cannot update the app, keep showing me unable to install! :(

65 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 7:54 PM

@Ben – I am connected to WiFi as well and I didnt even restart the phone, went to Date and Time, changed it to 15 08 2011 and even before I press back to go to the home screen the notification appeared in the middle of the screen asking me if I want to download the update!
to be honest, I would leave it if I were u, nothing new and the update for ur app wont work :(
At least wait for the official full update!

66 Ben June 15, 2010 at 7:58 PM

Ok thanks. What do you mean by the update for ur app wont work? Do you think I will be able to download the new ROM from the HTC website?
I hope this OTA update eventually works for me…..

67 Brad June 15, 2010 at 7:59 PM

i think im just going to have to wait… reset time to today.. rebooted… reset time to dec 31 2011 – restarted nothing yet… =/ so merh.

dont forget! the 2.1 update will wipe the phone – i used Mybackup – its free for 30 days – which is fine if you start using it now …unless htc mess us around again … lets pray that isnt so…
but i did the last time the update was meant to come so ive had to pay £3 for the full version but its handy as you can backup your data onto an online account.. or the sd card… SMS mms..apps aswell (only market links so would have to download it all again…)

68 Neoklis June 15, 2010 at 8:02 PM

I changed the date to august and it worked instantly!
HTC Hero Unlocked (UK)

69 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 8:02 PM

@Ben – I meant the app I have on my phone, found an update and want to download it but there was an error each time it want to install (not the actual update for the phone, just a game app), but it finally worked now.
As I said, nothing new in this update, so do not bother really, wait for the proper one and hopefully the 18th as someone said before.

@Brad – thanks mate, didnt know that, I will store my data and hopefully we get it this time, thanks again, nearly lose everything :)

70 shk June 15, 2010 at 8:05 PM

@Brad Mine is the gsm hero with telus… and mine is android 1.5 too…
im stilk trying the date change… i got nothing yet

71 Ben June 15, 2010 at 8:14 PM

Funnily enough, I am just trying to update an app and it is not working….do you think there is something happening and its just taking my phone a while to tell me?
It just wont begin the download of the app at all.
I really hope the update comes soon, want it so much!

72 Neoklis June 15, 2010 at 8:17 PM

It’s now finished updating and not only is there the “system software update” option in settings but also the wifi problem with the youtube app is fixed!!

73 Jose June 15, 2010 at 8:22 PM

Not working in Spain

74 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 8:25 PM

@Ben – I faced a problem with updating a game, several times download but when it reach to installation an error appears, however, I made it, so I assume if you keep trying it will work.
So its either the update we just did of the whole phone after changing the date, or a problem in Google Market as this website cited:
Good luck for everyone and keep us updated :)

75 Klaus June 15, 2010 at 8:25 PM

My God! Haven’t you guys read what all this is about???

It’s a minor update to prepare your phone for Éclair… It doesn’t contain a lot of new features or the new system…

It is PURELY a preparation update!

And byt the way – still no update in Denmark.

76 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 8:28 PM

Ben – I had the problem with updating one of the apps I have, but afer several trails it worked, so just keep trying, I assuming its becoz of the little update now, or a Google Market issue as listed by:
Keep us up to date guys if u get the 2.1, thanks

77 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 8:29 PM

Ben – I had the problem with updating one of the apps I have, but afer several trails it worked, so just keep trying, I assuming its becoz of the little update now, or a Google Market issue which is listed by few websites, but it will be solved soon.

But keep us up-to-date guys for the 2.1 :)

78 Kiyoshi June 15, 2010 at 8:50 PM

i don’t see any reason for restarting the phone after changing the date, just change and leave it alone, remember to connect to internet through wifi hotspot or 3G network, about few minutes ago the update should pop up. Download it and install it, leave it alone till the lockscreen appear, don’t do nothing with the phone :) It took a little bit long during the update process :)

79 anon2 June 15, 2010 at 8:55 PM

I live in Finland.
Didn’t get update UNTIL I CHANGED DATE TO 2011, took 3 sec and phone notified of new update.
Worked for me

80 @iPhones_suck June 15, 2010 at 8:57 PM

Date changed worked for me, but it stopped my root and my swype beta :( 2.1 better be good !

81 Ben June 15, 2010 at 8:58 PM

Thanks for all your help. I am still unable to update the app I am trying to update (its just a jokey vuvuzela app!) so maybe my phone is doing something, somehow but not updating. My build number is still “ CL(hash)82177 release keys”
I recently sent my hero away to be repaired and they install a fresh ROM when they repair it…hope its not a dodgy ROM!
I will keep waiting and if nothing happens hopefully I will still be able to get the update. I have emailed HTC to see if they can help.

82 jnow June 15, 2010 at 9:05 PM

Changed year to 2011 and still nothing… I’m from Czech Republic

83 Engberg June 15, 2010 at 9:11 PM

Changed my date to a year from now – rebooted and this is what happened:

I’m in Denmark by the way..

84 Foxman June 15, 2010 at 9:12 PM

Unlocked Hero in Hungary, set the date a month forward, immediately received the update. Everything went smooth, build number now ends with .93 and I have the system software updates menu. Thanks for the tip with the date, guys!

Anyways, woo-hoo! About time HTC…

85 Dubrish June 15, 2010 at 9:13 PM

In Russia, too, does not appear updated = (((

86 hsr June 15, 2010 at 9:20 PM

(G2 touch user) my screen has been showin the small fone icon next to white triangle with yellow exclamation mark inside it for the past hour and a half…any suggestions anyone?

87 Ben June 15, 2010 at 9:21 PM

Ahhh why wont this work for me? I have done the date change and tried everything but still not update for me. I am Orange in the UK – has anyone else in the UK who has a Hero on Orange got the update yet?
Does anyone have any other ideas how I can get the update?

88 rolandas June 15, 2010 at 9:25 PM

i’m in Lithuania. I got it.

89 Onge June 15, 2010 at 9:25 PM

UK user here. I changed the date to 2011 and it immediately prompted me to download the update. Once downloaded I got a loading bar on a black screen and then my phone rebooted. Be warned, the reboot took ages and I almost pulled the battery out fearing my phone had crashed!

90 Rajpal June 15, 2010 at 9:26 PM

woah the date thing really does work cheers guys :)

91 Neil June 15, 2010 at 9:30 PM

@Ben Im on Orange UK too and the date hack won’t work for me either

92 Adrien June 15, 2010 at 9:31 PM

Changed the date to 2011 and it worked straight away.
G2 on T-Mobile UK

93 Graeme June 15, 2010 at 9:36 PM

@Brad @Matthew exactly same here! On T Mo contract Hero running 1.5,exactly same build number, updated by moving the date fwd to 15/08/2011, asked me to update now, hit the button, screen went black and ‘unpacking’ started, progress bar got to half way through then the white triangle with exclamation mark in it next to a smaller phone symbol. Had to take the battery out, phone went back to normal (1.5) – boooooooooo!!! T-Mo stasis strikes again! I’ve DM’d them twice recently via Twitter and get the same stick answer “The update will be announced via Twitter and our support pages when it is available..” RUBBISH T-Mo!!!

94 Smaug June 15, 2010 at 9:45 PM

HTC HERO Firmware over the air not working in Ireland.

95 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 9:49 PM

@Graeme – No mate u started well but why removing the battery? We all got the black screen and waited for some time, I think 5min for me .. anyway, u not suppose to get anything, I mean we all have the 1.5 version even after the update. All u will get a System Software Update new in ur About Phone in settings. Which will keep track for the upcoming updates. Someone above said it will come this Friday the 18th … so hopefully this time its true.

By the way, Its HTC who controlling the updates, and I totally hate them, my next android is from Samsung or Motorola … they all got the updates before us :(

96 bojanm June 15, 2010 at 9:52 PM

worked for me after setting year to 2012…

97 Josh June 15, 2010 at 9:59 PM

Just recieved the update 21:59 15 june.

98 add June 15, 2010 at 10:02 PM

Orange UK do not seem able to receive update with a date change, guess we will just have to keep waiting!

99 BenG June 15, 2010 at 10:11 PM

changing the date works…. i’ve got a small update….little more then 4 MB…. where’s the rest… some one knows when the source code for froyo 2.2 will be out so we could install it on our herio… without sense UI???

100 BenG June 15, 2010 at 10:18 PM

How log should the phone reboot after the update….?????

101 BenG June 15, 2010 at 10:19 PM

ok… it’s on… bow just the rest of it :D

102 jim June 15, 2010 at 10:20 PM

orange uk, changed to 2011, no update

103 timsett June 15, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Russia. I changed the date to July and it immediately prompted me to download the update.

104 damo June 15, 2010 at 10:37 PM

Just got it on a standard UK g2 touch, I didn’t change any dates, but turned phone on from flat. Update took about 5 mins, now roll on 2.1 :)

105 Manz June 15, 2010 at 10:47 PM

Anyone on 3uk….cant get it after changing the date….looks the same for Orange =[

106 Warren June 15, 2010 at 10:55 PM

Still nothing for Payg orange HTC heros in UK….even after date trick, though I don’t think the update has anything to do with carriers, should I just wait?

107 Kay June 15, 2010 at 11:03 PM

Just got the update in Norway.. got it when I changed date to 16.08.2012:)

108 Pip June 15, 2010 at 11:03 PM

on 3uk here tried changeing the date to 2011,2012 no update yet

109 Zaid June 15, 2010 at 11:03 PM

@damo – mate what u saying? U got the 2.1 update? U sure? When, how, where??!!!

110 Mahfooz June 15, 2010 at 11:14 PM

on 3UK and still no update after several date changes and restarts :(

111 Dingledoodie June 15, 2010 at 11:15 PM

I have a feeling Orange UK customers won’t get this OTA update. I also have a horrid feeling we’ll have to wait longer than others for 2.1 while Orange do some hacking and branding to it.

112 Alan June 15, 2010 at 11:26 PM

G2 Touch (non rooted) T-Mobile. Turned phone off then on again, informed me of an available update … took a few mins but seemed OK.

Now have new “System Software Update” option.

My build number is CL#154725 release-keys

Its odd that everyone seems to have slightly different numbers even if they’re on T-Mobile too.

113 Warren June 15, 2010 at 11:30 PM

Looks like Ill buy a HTC desire then sim free and stick in my contract similar, the hero doesn’t cut it for me on 1.5, I was willing to see 2.1 first but now,its just got out of hand

114 Brian Morrison June 15, 2010 at 11:41 PM

Well, 2.1 on the Hero must now be just around the corner, so if you have one then hold fire on that Desire until after you’ve seen how fast the Froyo update makes it ;-)

I have a SIM free UK Hero. I changed my date to mid August, and almost immediately was prompted to download the update. About 10 minutes later, the phone had rebooted itself twice, installed the update and started up. The new Software Update menu is present, and it all worked quite happily.

115 dippydipper June 15, 2010 at 11:46 PM

Turned phone off and on again. Changed date to August and after less than a minute the update popped up. UK Orange Hero

116 David June 16, 2010 at 12:31 AM

omg date change worked! cheers guys!

117 David June 16, 2010 at 12:36 AM

Just though ill let you guys know i have a g2 touch hero t-mobile network update recived in uk birmingham

118 shk June 16, 2010 at 1:11 AM

119 eboye June 16, 2010 at 1:12 AM

Date changing worked, now updated :)

Waiting for that 2.1 OTA update :D

I`m soooooooo happy

I`m from Serbia btw

120 Kallum June 16, 2010 at 1:42 AM

can someone please tell ne what this Orange exclamation mark is when its half unpacking, it seems like its the only.unanswered question here

121 wellthatsalright June 16, 2010 at 1:45 AM

I second that! It’s doing my head in! I’m thinking about formatting my phone and trying again, but maybe I’m not thinking straight. I’ve had a long day and was looking forward to getting a step closer to 2.1 :( !

122 Threeark June 16, 2010 at 2:08 AM

Looks like us Canadians on Telus are going to have to wait longer… changing the date is not working over here.

123 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:17 AM

@Graeme Still have a problem.. it doesnt start unpacking… it jsut rebooted – ileft it and then during reboot of the HTC symbol etc and then t-Mobile symbol.. it went to a black screen with a whitetriangle on it and a phone next to it… =/

its now tomorrow (as it was yest..but now its today.. so im ging to try the cahnge date thing again.. hopefully thisll work – but im going to disc onnect mobile internet and just have wifi on…

124 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:23 AM

changed date – got update now option – no option to download.. so im guessing files to run it are already on my phone! – try to update this time the unpacking symbol flashes on for 3 seconds then goes to the white triangle problem…
what is the problem here???

125 Steve Jones June 16, 2010 at 2:54 AM

Changed the date to 2011. After a minute or so the phone prompted me for the update. Downloaded ok. Pressed update now. Phone restarts and waits on ‘Hero’ screen indefinitely.

Anyone else have this?

126 Patrick Cyr June 16, 2010 at 3:13 AM

Changed the date many times and reboot but nothing happen for HTC Hero from Telus in Canada….still have too wait longer :(

127 Francisco June 16, 2010 at 4:21 AM

Changed the date and worked after reboot. The pop-up appeared but I hit “later” to go for a wi-fi spot and I dont know where to find it again… does anyone knows??

128 BenG June 16, 2010 at 5:49 AM

after the update the phone starts up veeeeery long don’t worry

129 Kallum June 16, 2010 at 6:10 AM

it worked for me last night but after Sleeeep and leaving my phone on charge, trying it this morning did not work, I think T-Mobile has fixed it now

130 BenG June 16, 2010 at 6:28 AM

@Kallum, you mean the small update not 2.1??? I’m trying and trying, but no 2.1 shows up… Engadget was stupid enough to write that we’ve got the 2.1 update…… damm it!!!!

131 Revoluzifer June 16, 2010 at 7:17 AM

Date change worked for me (Germany), got the update.
But the installation quits with an error since I’ve got the cyanogen mod bootloder installed.
Any advice how to remove it? Please mail me!

132 Peter June 16, 2010 at 7:25 AM

I changed the date to 2011 and voila, it started the update.

133 Peter June 16, 2010 at 7:43 AM

However, it didn’t do a full update. Why not?

134 jaco June 16, 2010 at 8:15 AM

@Alan and all T-Mobiles UK
Mine just asked to do the update (without the dates change) and did it all very well (I think).
But just like all T-Mobile users, we have the new option “System Software Update”, but the build number doesn’t match the one HTC says on their website. After the update I have (I don’t remember what I had before). Maybe it’s a different number for T-Mobile Hero’s?… Because our firmware’s where changed!

135 seth June 16, 2010 at 8:44 AM

When im changing the date, it goes straigh back to todays. Even if is not on auto it changes after 2 sek, whats up with that ?

136 roose21 June 16, 2010 at 9:03 AM

I’m on Orange UK and have tried changing the date and waiting and changing the date and rebooting but nothing works… any ideas? This is so frustrating! Orange UK is a joke… the sooner you merge with T-Mobile the better… hurry up with my update!

137 Brad June 16, 2010 at 9:09 AM

@Roose21 – i read somewhere that orange are not letting their customers update with the prerequisite update…. as they want to test with it first….
but above in the list – some people on orange already have it I think… so im not too sure whats going on – seems a bit hit and miss really…
I’ve contacted HTC with a query about the triangle error

Hopefully receieve news shortly…

138 add June 16, 2010 at 9:16 AM

Still nothing on orange UK pay monthly, what a joke!

139 Steve June 16, 2010 at 9:25 AM

Contacted HTC about the build number not changing on T-M UK and they replied saying that it doesn’t change

“Dear Steve, Thank you for contacting HTC Europe. You have received the preparatory update, which is the first part of the update and it does not change the build number. The preparatory update will be shortly followed by the full Éclair update. You will receive it in the next few days. Best Regards, Francesca”

140 Horia June 16, 2010 at 9:29 AM

Change the date on the phone to July and the dialog will pop up instantly.

141 Ben June 16, 2010 at 9:35 AM

Hi Guys,
I too am on Orange UK and have tried all te date changes I can think of and nothing yet. So I emailed HTC and they replied saying –

“Dear Ben, Thank you for contacting us. In regards to your query, the process in on going as we speak. You will receive it soon. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Kind regards, Federico F. HTC

So it sounds like they may just be taking a while to roll it out to all hand sets. I said in my email to them that I am on Orange so I trust Orange users will be recieving it soon. Hopefully.

142 rick June 16, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Changed the date to Aug 2010/2011 but I don’t get the update..I’m on t-mob UK.

143 Brad June 16, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Well ive spoken to t-mobile – they advised me to hard reset – to then get the updates manually – if you do this MAKE SURE TO BACK UP DATA – i use MyBackup – online services aswell.

144 John Maguire June 16, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Very annoyed

did date thing and got Triangle ! did factory rest and update automatically arrived but as before Triangle !.
Phoned HTC been advised to wait till second update and send phone in to them as ota for second update WILL NOT work without first update.
contacted T-Mobile and got cut off by overseas call center.
Just on to them again and they seem to be clueless regarding this update lol.
will update when finished

145 seth June 16, 2010 at 9:48 AM

Dude, what do u mean manually? I cant even change the date coz its back to todays after a few secs

146 HTC Hero owner June 16, 2010 at 9:56 AM

For clarity, this is just a preliminary update (not the full one as implied by Endgadget) before the 2.1 update sometime between now and the end of the month.

I have a non-branded Hero (with an Orange sim card) – I set the date to 15th August 2010. A message promptly appeared about the preliminary OTA update. I selected to download and then selected to install. It then took 5-10 mins to do so, including a prolonged reboot.

The reason that some Orange customers can access this preliminary update while others can’t is possibly that the ones that can get it have the unbranded Hero, with an Orange simcard, while those that can’t have the Orange-branded handset.

Hopefully it will be accessible to everyone soon and the 2.1 update will follow swiftly.

147 Lloyd June 16, 2010 at 9:58 AM

Orange really do make me sick, and I blame them rather than HTC as they are the ones who sold me the phone.

Why are they keeping the details a secret? Do they not have a dedicated eRelations team that can see the customer anger this is causing? Do they think that throwing an update on us will be “a nice surprise” for us all?

Come on Orange, publish a roadmap and stop messing us around.

148 Warren June 16, 2010 at 10:03 AM

Just spoke to Orange. They don’t know anything about the update yet. I then rang htc. They told me they’re sending the update per network as each network has a slightly different rom so the network provider has to agree with htc on what they need??? Anyway he said t-mobile customers have started to recieve the update without changing their dates but Orange have not been sent it yet as i said they’re doing it as an when per network. They assured me it could be anytime now for all networks. One important thing they told me was to accept the update as soon as it pops up as if you don’t it won’t pop up again for another two weeks!

149 Brad June 16, 2010 at 10:07 AM

2 Weeks?A?!?!? thats madness! – i have done a hard reset so im hoping that ill get the update soon if not ill give htc a call myself – what number is best? non-084/7 number (does have any numbers? )

150 Neil June 16, 2010 at 10:08 AM

Just changed the date to July 16 and the update appeared

151 Neil June 16, 2010 at 10:10 AM

You need to go into Settings Then My Location and remove the tick against Use network provided Time.
Then you can manually change the date there.

152 John Maguire June 16, 2010 at 10:17 AM

Ok Update,

Finally finished on the phone to T-mobile and no joy they are not aware of the update but have advised me to take it into the shop to get it flashed i thought to myself how if they don’t know about the update either way guess i’ll just have to wait.

Have tweeted it to @TmobileUKhelp and they have dm’d me to get me to send them a pic of the Triangle ! so grabbed one off the net have just finished resetting all the data back from factory reset not going through that again

Will update if i find anything out

153 Neil June 16, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Talking complete rubbish.

Now that the pone has rebooted after applyign the update I can give you the correct info.

In Settings go to Date & Time.
Remove the tick against Automatic (use network provided values)
Then change the data by selecting Set Date

154 Warren June 16, 2010 at 10:23 AM

01753218960 – Customer services.

155 Rick June 16, 2010 at 10:28 AM

CS for who Warren?

156 Brad June 16, 2010 at 10:32 AM

@ John, no point going through it all again.. not in greeat detail mate… as the big update due in the next week .. or the 18th… wil lwipe all data lol…=]

Hard reset – gafter doing this i forgot abotu the small rom updateo n t-mobile’s website when i first got my phone and that was a little itny update – so am going to do that and hope that clicks the link together – as it wont update this pre-update without having the most up to date rom correct?

157 Warren June 16, 2010 at 10:34 AM

Sorry Brad asked for a number. It for htc europe uk based in Slough I think. Its on htc website.

158 Brad June 16, 2010 at 10:38 AM

Ah Brill Thanks Warren – im just going to install this rom update – so i can hopefully get this preupdate through again if not – then ill give them a ring

159 Alex June 16, 2010 at 10:51 AM

Cheers John M for the update, please continue to keep us informed. I too have the UK t-mobile G2 and after attempting the date trick i got option to update. I went for it and half way through what looked like the installation the warning triangle apeared on my phone too. Had to force restart and now the phone appears to not have installed the update.

Considering a factory reset….

What have other G2 uk owners done post warning triangle?

cheers all.

160 Jon June 16, 2010 at 10:52 AM

The date tricked worked perfectly in Australia as well.. Tried 16/12/2011 and the update warning came at once =)

Now we’ve just got to twiddle thumbs till the full update comes..

161 Brad June 16, 2010 at 10:54 AM

@ Alex – i have done a factory reset – and tried the date thing again – still nothing!
build number: 2.73.1110.26 CL:#69351 release-keys

why cant htc just do a simple download from their website…. ughhh >.>

162 seth June 16, 2010 at 11:04 AM

Neil. I’ve done that, and it allows me to change the date, but its changing itself to todays date after few secs, wierd

163 set June 16, 2010 at 11:18 AM

I guess I’m just gonna wait for a proper updates

164 Brad June 16, 2010 at 11:31 AM

Well, I spoke to HTC – very helpful guy – sort of… bascially their technical team know theres a problem with some devices – and they are trying to sort it out… – he said hes putting my phone into the list of ones not working – so i advise you do the same – to doubley check /confirm you get the fixed pre-update.. (great promises lie ahead for 2.1 if even the pre-update isnt working…)
Not doing much till now – leaving my phones date a month ahead and seeing what happens… so yea

im out of ideas now

although when i go to the ‘POWER+HOME’ situation and get the linux bash line – i have 3 options
factory full reset

the lady from t-mobiel didnt know what the was but i factory rest – now ive gone back in try to run it – and it says file or directoy not found =/..

so maybe the data has part downlaoded so HTC think ive got it but it hhasnt fully installed.. =/

any ideas im welcome to them…

165 Alan June 16, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Probably worth reformatting the SD card too before upgrading to 2.1

I recently did a hard reset, but my SD card was left intact …. so now it contains loads of directories relating to old apps I had on my phone before I did the hard reset.

166 Steve June 16, 2010 at 11:36 AM

Hey. I changed my date. And was prompted for the download. I downloaded ok and was prompted to install. Whenever I click update now, the phone will restart, display the ‘Hero’ startup screen and thats it. I have left it for over an hour and still nothing.

Is anyone else getting this problem?

167 Snowmonco June 16, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Got mine after doing the date thing on an unlocked (white) GSM Hero, in Portugal (TMN carrier).
The reboot takes some time. Now, let’s wait for the real thing…

168 Brad June 16, 2010 at 12:05 PM

@Alan – thanks good idea actually thankfully i have a SD-to-MicroSD converter card so will use that.. didnt think of that – maybe ill get the update afterwards ? well ive hard-reset my phone already now so not bothered aboutdata as its all backedup :)

169 Richard June 16, 2010 at 12:11 PM

I’ve got a G2 T-Mobile Version of the hero, and yesterday moving the date forward worked and prompted for the download, install failed with the while triagle. I’ve tried hard reset and that didn’t make any difference. This morning did another hard reset in an attempt to try again but this time changing the date did nothing and i’m not getting prompts on the update. Maybe T-Mobile are blocking today?

170 Wally June 16, 2010 at 12:49 PM

The date trick worked for me (Bouygues Telecom, France).

The update added a “software update” screen in the menu “about phone” !

The UI seems faster : the email widget was unusable before, and it’s ok now.

171 Mike June 16, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Hey guys

I have my unlocked Hero on an O2 account and have also tried several time changes and re-boots of which haven’t prompte for the update.

Anyone with O2 with the same issue?

172 cashmang June 16, 2010 at 1:04 PM

im having the same issues, the date date change doesnt work with 3uk

i think those on 02/tmobile/3uk are having the same issue

173 Brad June 16, 2010 at 1:15 PM

@Richard – I’m on the same stage as you, but doing what Alan said – clean the SDCARD – as when i get to the linux screen to hard reset – i have option in install – maybe the update downloads to the sdcard i think then installs it – it is unable to install from that menu as says file doesnt exxist – maybe cache deep in the system says its there still hence why no update prompt after hardresetting?

Ill let you know ocne ive tried again!

174 Rick June 16, 2010 at 1:17 PM

This is from Tmobile twitter:

Hi Richard, The update will be stepped rolled out to customers over the next few weeks. Anything else we can help with let us know :-)

175 Brad June 16, 2010 at 1:22 PM

@Rick – yea thats because they actually have no idea – they shouldnt be doing that many updates tbh….
but in all honesty if there letting people download 2.1 preupdate then let them install 2.1 from htc – maybe its to keep customers happy while they work on their own versio nwhich would overwrite htc’s?
i hope its not ttoo long i dont want to get 2.1 then personalizde it all to then have to do it all over again while its wiped again =/…

176 Richard June 16, 2010 at 1:39 PM

I’ve wiped my SD Card, done a full reset and it’s not prompting for the update again, so I guess I’ll have to leave it for now, can’t think of much else to try.

177 Brad June 16, 2010 at 1:43 PM

@Richard – Ah right… hmm =/ well HTC have advised me to after hard reset – sign into google account connected to mobile internet – and i should receieve the prompt.
… so who knows.. =/

178 Brad June 16, 2010 at 1:53 PM

@Richard – Forgot to mention the guy from HTC i was talking to said either do the hard reset option ( which as of yet hasnt worked – phones just finished loading from completing sd wipe) the other option was to wait 14 days.. coz i have a feeling thats when the hero checks for updates… i dont have any idea how that can be shortened if at all possible?

179 MJ June 16, 2010 at 1:59 PM

I noticed that I hadn’t updated the firmware released last November, and did that last night. Post that, I got a notification about an update. Unfortunately, by then, neither my Wifi nor my mobile broadband were not switched on, and so, it failed. I hit the back button, and since then I have tried these date tricks but can’t see the notification again :-(

180 João June 16, 2010 at 2:02 PM

I tried to change the date and reboot … and didn’t work.
But after a reset to factory …. i’ve got the pop-up message !!! :-)

João from Portugal

181 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:02 PM

@MJ yes i thought about that because i had updated the firmware.. then after doging a hardreset went to install the november firmware again – but i have exactly the same build number as that firmware? =/
can you confirm your build number – post firmware update(november)

182 MJ June 16, 2010 at 2:02 PM

*Unfortunately, by then, neither my Wifi nor my mobile broadband were switched on, and so, it failed*

183 MJ June 16, 2010 at 2:04 PM

@Brad, my new build # is CL#69351 release-keys. It was 1.76 something, IIRC.

184 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:04 PM

@MJ “can you confirm your build number – post firmware update(november)”
you said you installed the november firmware.. what is your build number now? (before the preupdate form htc for 2.1 – as as you said that didnt complete/update the phone)

185 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:05 PM

@MJ – Ah okay fair enough hmm i guess its now a waiting game for us with the odd builds – HTC have confirmed their support team know of the problems with certain devices not updating – how long it takes them to fix it thats another matter …

186 MJ June 16, 2010 at 2:05 PM

@Brad Also, usually “firmware update” means that the software _within_ the phone is overwritten, so I doubt if there’s a way to go back to the earlier version unless you have a backup somewhere

187 MJ June 16, 2010 at 2:06 PM

@Brad I’m sick and fed up with T Mobile dragging their feet!

188 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:08 PM

@MJ I agree – but this was htc i spoke to as t-mobile havent pushed this update out HTC have – but i think t-mobile are pushing their version out in the next few weeks – which im a bit annoyed at BUT its expected they have to do their own fiddling – thats open source lol. but lets just pray its not 2 months down the line…. otherwise i may just root….

189 Richard June 16, 2010 at 2:13 PM

I’m hoping someone manages to find a way to install manually and download from the web rather than all this ota stuff. Maybe there is an app in market place to force updates rather than wait 2 weeks. I did a hard reset twice last night and each time I was prompted to install the update, not today, I’m thinking HTC or T-Mobile have got wind of us lot moving dates forward and altered their download script?

190 androidnewbie June 16, 2010 at 2:17 PM

Has anyone with a 3UK Hero had an update yet?!

191 cashmang June 16, 2010 at 2:19 PM

no :( im in the same boat as you

192 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:20 PM

Possibly… I asked if there was a manual install instead of OTA and the guy went and asked but didnt get anywhere – I must say they are good at not saying dates… they must be trained well to just give um and urr answers…
I have a feeling HTC have found the problem with some phones not updating – and have stopped pushing out the update as the guy asked for my IMEI number and contact details – so that he could send that to the technical support team so they can know which phones have not been able to update…

lets just have faith they dont screw us over again.. =/ although a colelague of mine has suggested to just wait till T-Mobile release their version ( as ive seen a few places I think its within the next 2 weeks ) as otherwise it means we have HTC’s version.. not T-mobiles could mess the phone about not having the correcting system settigns for T-mobile networks etc?

193 androidnewbie June 16, 2010 at 2:27 PM

I suspect we will be the last of all the networks to get this damn update, not to mention the actual 2.1 main event! I seem to remember reading ‘official HTC announcements’ over the last 3-4 months listing 3UK as being the last of the UK operators to get the 2.1 update… damn typical. Let me know if you get anything…

194 Codehead June 16, 2010 at 2:37 PM

Got the update after setting the date to 2011 (SIM free UK Hero on Vodafone).

It did sit at the HTC screen for ages after rebooting, but now seems fine. Mem usage seems better already. Constantly getting 60Mb free now instead of ~30Mb as it was before. Phone seems more responsive as a result.

Hopefully this will help shut up all the braying comments on HTCs Facebook posts.

195 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:44 PM

@To all who couldnt get the update..
Ive spoken to HTC, and after asking the same question in 10 difrferent ways.. ive finally got a confirmation…
its not that great…

“Dear Brad Thank you for contacting us. In regards to update I can help you with that. There is no other way apart from waiting the 2 weeks or booking it into the repair centre. If you want to do this then please call the support line as we need to allocate a time slot for picking up the device I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Best regards, ***** * HTC”

So yea.. my next question is wait time …. im not gonna look forward to hearing it..

196 MJ June 16, 2010 at 2:55 PM

@Brad Great work, Brad. Annoyed at the news though. If they can’t be nimble on their feet, then they should think twice about going with open source operating systems.

197 Brad June 16, 2010 at 2:56 PM

True true, but I’d rather be with HTC on android than using the xperia… lol.

198 cashmang June 16, 2010 at 3:05 PM

yeah that i would of guessed too :/ i did ask HTC and there reply indicated we would all get the update at the same time (as in 2.1) i would quote it but my hero doesnt show emails from htc….strange lol, but thats the least of my worries

i will do fingers crossed hey

ps i will hopefully post to reply i got from htc later on when i get home, i might of deleted it :/ mistake

199 Brad June 16, 2010 at 4:16 PM

@All on T-Mobile
Got a reply – 7-10 working days to send it off for repair – and thats to HTC for them to apply the upgrade… they have said 14 days till the release whether he was just agreeing with me or that i managed to get him to confirm it by suggesting it was 14 days… Also you might just wish to wait for T-Mobile to release their version as its more likely to work better with your network! – as they have said its around the same time as HTC’s release so I have a good feeling they will be keeping to their ‘due by end of june’ statement.

Heres the final email from HTC:

“Dear Brad Thank you for contacting us. In regards to repair centre I can help you with that. This will take 7-10 working days so it may be worth waiting the 14 days. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Best regards, ***** * HTC”

200 Braidy Johnson June 16, 2010 at 5:12 PM

Anybody got the update on Orange UK yet? I’ve tried the “date” trick but no luck :(

201 Zaid June 16, 2010 at 5:32 PM

Its coming at the end of June as HTC said … no need for any waiting or changes or anything, just wait till end of the month!

202 Brad June 16, 2010 at 5:36 PM

@Braidy – exactly as Zaid says – htc ‘should’ be releasing it Friday – hence why end of the month for Networks seems extremely likely.. for T-mobile anyway as theyve publicly said end of june – as for orange ive no idea – I know 3 are unlikely to get it that early…

203 Braidy Johnson June 16, 2010 at 5:49 PM

Cheers guys :D

204 Guppien June 16, 2010 at 5:51 PM

Changed the date to 2011 and got the update in Norway (Telenor) after a few seconds.
Seems to be working fine after the update…

205 Klaus June 16, 2010 at 6:32 PM

Seems I’m faulty…

Haven’t installed the last 2 ROM updates, and that may very well be why I’m not being offered the preparation update…

206 Gunj Patel June 16, 2010 at 6:57 PM

I did the date trick and the update notification popped up…however, once i press update now, the phone restarts, but it remains frozen on the screen that says HERO!! UGH! its so annoying. i tried a hard reset of the phone yet still the same problem.
any suggestions?

207 Brad June 16, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Wait until you officially get it dont do the date trick… youll get it when your meant to get it… ;D

208 John Maguire June 16, 2010 at 8:03 PM

ok Update,

have had a reply on twitter from t-mobile again not good news but atleast they know about the issue

TmobileUKhelp Hi, the recent G2 update has been causing a few issues, it`s being looked into. In the meantime have a look at

hope this helps

209 Amit Maisuria June 16, 2010 at 8:29 PM

Thanks for the update.. I’m on Orange UK, pay monthly and have been trying almost everything last night so appreciate the update on June 16, 2010 at 9:35 AM.

210 Wayne June 16, 2010 at 9:59 PM

Ive gotten the the smaller update..Using the non branded hero here in Jamaica

211 Henry June 16, 2010 at 10:59 PM

I changed my date on the phone to 2011 and it worked on “Norwegian” version of the HTC Hero. Bing on 2.1 now:-)

212 Steve June 16, 2010 at 11:27 PM

@Gunj Patel

Your having the exact same problems that I’m getting. Have you rooted or ever tried to root your phone?

213 Gunj Patel June 17, 2010 at 7:22 AM

Yes I have tried in the past, however, it never worked for me. I’m not sure what is wrong but I called HTC customer support and since my phone is still under warranty, they recommended I send it in for repairs. I sent my phone in and will update once I hear any news from them.

214 Brad June 17, 2010 at 9:09 AM

@Gunj – itll take 7-10 days… and your phone will try updating again in 14 days… T-Mobile have said they are releasing their update by end of june… which is in just under 2 weeks… so i didnt bother sendiing in my phone for an update- when its not T-Mobiles update -but if yours is unbranded.. then fair enough if it is branded i wouldnt of sent it off… best to wait till your carriers release.

215 Revoluzifer June 17, 2010 at 9:12 AM

Anybody having problems with the update, because the phone is / was rooted?
Should be an error like “verification failed”…
Just head over here:

216 Ed Gillett June 17, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Date trick worked for me – advanced a year – (Sim Free HTC Hero with a Vodafone SIM). No initial reboot needed, gave me notification of update immediately. After the reboot it took an AGE to get past the “HTC” Loading screen, but have patience and it will finish booting up. Now updated with the FOTA update and have my System SOftware Update option now, but of course, not 2.1 yet :)

217 alastair brown June 17, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Dissatisfied with HTC customer service… no update in England yet :/

218 Marco June 17, 2010 at 10:40 AM

i changed the date to agaust 2011 in germany and it worked fine for me! gsm hero with no contract (unlocked). thanks a 1000 times!

219 Johan June 17, 2010 at 12:24 PM

I havn’t gotten the update yet (Sweden). The weird thing is the software version my phone is running.
1.76.405.6 146733 CL#47214 release-keys

Shouldn’t that be

220 cashmang June 17, 2010 at 12:41 PM

is there any reason why they have pulled off the old 3uk and orange roms from the htc website? :/

221 androidnewbie June 17, 2010 at 12:55 PM

have they?! They’re still showing on my HTC Support page for the Hero…

222 cashmang June 17, 2010 at 2:11 PM

sorry i must of had a lapse, or i could blame IE6 (some reason my company still uses it >_>)

it is still there :)

223 marlon June 17, 2010 at 2:25 PM

check this out my HTC Hero is locked to Orange , I’m in the Caribbean until Xmas and I’m using a Turbo Sim with the local network Sim . The Hero is Running Perfect all systems are running Email , Internet, etc……. Do you think I’ll get the update here ? If any one on orange gets it give me a shout. Thanks.

224 Manz June 17, 2010 at 3:54 PM

Three 3 users
I emailed them yesterday and they rang me back today just now.
They said they have received the update from HTC and are testing it with compatibility (3 branding etc) and it will be released soon over the air, they did not give a date.

225 cashmang June 17, 2010 at 4:05 PM

thanks mate your a star :)

226 kenmc June 17, 2010 at 4:38 PM

Worked for me just now : Ireland, O2, PayAsYouGo, Unlocked, SimFree.
Only thing is it shows the BuildNumber as 2.73.405.93 even tho the support site on HTC says “2.73.405.95 (Greece/ Ireland).”
I also have CL#154788 release-keys after the build number

227 Mikkel Caira June 17, 2010 at 6:08 PM

OMG, I did the date trick.
And it worked i got the update i did just change to (17, Aug, 2011)
Then the update did popup!. Thangs for the great tip gues! ;D

228 Ben June 17, 2010 at 7:16 PM

Any Orange UK contract users got their update yet? Still nothing for me :-( just hope its the same as Manz said about 3 – that Orange are just testing it and will release it soon.

229 Steve June 18, 2010 at 12:17 AM

I played with rooting my hero too. But lost interest. It might be that we both semi rooted them and this is what is causing the problem. I’m in the process of following the instructions on to un-root the phone. I’ll let you know how this goes.

230 Drew June 18, 2010 at 1:47 PM

im in the uk with a t-mobile unlocked hero, last nite i tried all the above tricks but got nothing, i did a hard reset and left it at that, but just now i had another go and moved the date forward a year and got the update straight away as i write this it has installed and is rebooting fine though it is only the prep update as im still on 1.5.

231 Brad June 18, 2010 at 5:20 PM

@Drew – hmm i might give it a try – although im on locked as on contract..ill let you know if i can get mine to try and update again

232 Brad June 18, 2010 at 5:30 PM

Oh my days.. its jsut asked me to do the update again.. wow… lets hope it installs

233 Brad June 18, 2010 at 5:31 PM

…Ps. when you have an updaten otification about to come up dont think you can press the back button … before it appears.. :|

234 Drew June 18, 2010 at 11:20 PM

hmmm since i received the prep update this morning , ive found that i cant download apps from the market, anyone else had this problem?

235 cashmang June 18, 2010 at 11:34 PM

try setting the date back to automatic

236 MAN June 19, 2010 at 12:22 AM

I am a user of G2 (HTC hero on tmobile UK) and changed the date to get the update, all went fine untill I got stuck with the infamous triangle. looked here looked there and found a solution posted by a nice soul.

it goes like this
1) hard reset (after the hard reset u might get a prompt to update your phone with the OTA update, please be patient and select “later”)
2) Update your ROM to the version it was before the hard reset (you can download it from from HTC website)
3) when the phone turns on after the update of the ROM from the HTC website it will automatically ask you again if you want to download the latest OTA update, this time feel free to update immediately. (it took my phone about 2 min.)

No more dreaded triangle :)

237 MAN June 19, 2010 at 12:25 AM

238 Brad June 19, 2010 at 1:17 AM

had an error after accessing console ( update failed again) so have put that in an email to HTC see if it helps them solve any problems.
@Man – thats been tried
ive hard reset and it is still the same build as on the website.

different things work for different people
others its just not working its extremely intermittent this update…

239 saj June 19, 2010 at 1:49 AM

In response to the above post by MAN. I’ve tried your solution for the triangle screen error. It does not work. I get the same triangle screen. I’m not really surprised because the factory reset does not remove the last updated Rom, so in actual fact your just reinstalling the same Rom again. In other words everyone should not waste their time with this suggestion because I don’t think this was tested before posting.

240 shak June 19, 2010 at 11:25 AM

I’m on orange uk contract, but my phone is rooted, will i still get the update ??

241 Sam June 19, 2010 at 6:40 PM

Not on Orange UK yet :’(

242 Rosie June 19, 2010 at 7:21 PM

I have good news! After following what some of you said about changing your date to 2011, turning off your phone, turning on again and going to turn your date back to “automatic to network” it told me there was an update! :D I’m currently downloading it too.

Everyone should try this, give it a try, it might work!

Ps. I’m on T-mobile G2 but I unlocked my phone quite a while ago. All the best to everyone :)

243 wayne June 19, 2010 at 7:21 PM

change the date to august and update was recieved in seconds , and downloaded fine .

244 Rosie June 19, 2010 at 7:41 PM

Can I just ask, this is not the 2.1 update? I updated it, and my build number is CL#154725 release-keys. Is that right?

245 Jonathan June 19, 2010 at 7:57 PM

Got the update totally automatically last night. Still on Android 1.5 though.

246 Dave June 19, 2010 at 8:55 PM

Here is something that might help anyone on a G2 (T-mobile branded Hero).
The date changing trick will work in order for your phone to force the update, but if its like mine and fails to install it, you will just get a warning triangle and no update.
This can be sorted, but the bad new is, you have to flash the phone with a 1.5 rom.
If you used the rom from the t-mobile site, the update won’t take effect, but if you go to HTC’s site and input your phone’s serial number, it will give you the correct 1.5 version for your handset. Once you have installed it and your phone reboots you should instantly get the option to download and install the update, and it will work.
I know this is a pain having to reflash the phone back to factory settings, but we will have to do this anyway to get the 2.1 update later this month, so now is a good time to get your backups done and prepare the phone.
My back up pro worked great for me, so ensure you do a backup immediately prior to flashing the phone, and then the restore should be exactly as you had it before wiping it clean.
Good luck :o )

247 Brad June 19, 2010 at 11:13 PM

@Dave yes that prob ably will work butt thats HTC’s version and ccertain things may not work in the long term on t-mobiles network! as it has to be t-mobiles version for everything to work smoothly i wouldnt risk it just for a 2 week head start on the update!

248 Dave June 20, 2010 at 12:04 PM

The HTC version does specify that its a G2 (T-mobile UK) rom update.
Everything on my phone is working the same as it was before the update, none of the T-mobile features seem to have been affected, and if its the T-mobile version that is preventing the update from happening, then all G2 users should put up with 1.5 or upgrade to a new handset.
I did read somewhere that HTC have said that customers who are unable to get the upgrades can wait for the 2.1 to be released, and then send the handset to HTC to be flashed. This could leave people without a phone for a few days, and will only be flashing the same firmware on that we can do at home in under 15 mins.
Whichever route people choose, i hope it works fine and their phone is running as it should, but i’m not happy about waiting any longer so i’ve done it the hard way, and it worked.

249 JR June 20, 2010 at 5:55 PM
isn’t this the update everyone is waiting for?

250 JR June 20, 2010 at 6:43 PM

i did the OTA update just now and when it rebooted but now its just stuck on the screen with t-mobile on it. Any suggestions?

251 Dave June 20, 2010 at 8:25 PM

The link you have posted is for the 1.5 rom, not the 2.1 Eclair. (check the date of when it was available, november 2009)
That is the software i flashed my phone with in order for it to work with the new OTA update that HTC pushed out recently.
The phone will hang on the T-mobile screen for a bit longer than normal as it restores the factory settings, don’t worry about it.

252 Amit Maisuria June 20, 2010 at 9:56 PM

Still no update for me…on UK Orange contract, Hero is not rooted or unlocked.

253 Dave June 20, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Have you tried installing the 1.5 rom from HTC’s website.
It will ask for the phone serial number and then allow you to download the correct version for your phone.
It works for the T-mobile version, so should work for Orange versions too.

254 Matt June 20, 2010 at 10:04 PM

Still no update for me yet either – tried the date thing and re-starting my phone several times. I’m on Orange UK (contract).

255 Brad June 20, 2010 at 10:43 PM

i might just do it quickly to save me getting to use to the new home screen ive set up after flashing it… but not tonight xD

256 Brad June 21, 2010 at 8:47 AM

@Dave, how did you flash it? when i put in my serial number… it says “Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device”… =/

257 Chris June 21, 2010 at 9:49 AM

@Dave I am on the latest Orange ROM from HTC, no update yet. Guess I will just have to wait.

@Brad you need to use the right ROM for a phone, the phone will be sold either unbranded or carrier branded. If your’s has an operator logo on the back it will be a branded phone, else you need the plain HTC ROM.

258 Si June 21, 2010 at 11:31 AM

Tmobile HTC Hero – I tried to change it to Aug 09 and nothing happened, even after a reset. Then I tried chaning to 2011 (June) and I received the update notification. My network data transfer was disabled (as had gone over fair use limit) so the update seems to have been delivered via wifi.

Before the update I was running:-
(manually installed a ROM from HTC support website a while back).

Now running:-
My phone is an un-branded TMOBILE one purchased on a TMOBILE contract from expansys.
Hope this helps others waiting patiently for the udpate like I had been!

259 Adrian G June 21, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Worked for me – T-Mobile UK. Had to change date to 2011 but worked after that.

260 Adrian G June 21, 2010 at 1:06 PM

Actually….it failed. I suspect this has happened to others who have had the exclamation mark. I pressed home and power to get to the recovery utlity and I get the following:

Installing update…
E:failure at line 1: blah blah Installation aborted.

261 Brad June 21, 2010 at 1:35 PM

@Chris – ah yes i am on contract with T-Mobile G2 Touch – it would be easier when people suggested downloading roms – they give af ull description of what phone they have! :)

im just gonna wait till t-mobiles come out…

262 saj June 21, 2010 at 1:41 PM

For all you guys in the UK experiencing triangle errors on the T-Mobile G2 Touch. Reinstall the latest Rom from the HTC website(makesure it is the T-Mobile G2 Touch version). Then try installing the update again. If you already have the Rom on your PC from the last time u updated your phone this won’t work. Trust me I’ve been through this. For some reason the software on website and the one on my PC are different even though they are the same build. good luck.

263 JR June 21, 2010 at 7:43 PM

After the update the youtube application worked better and there was an option to check for updates, but the build number is still

264 BC June 21, 2010 at 7:53 PM

Does anybody have any feedback from 3 UK re a ROM upgrade to support the expected Android 2.1 firmware.

265 John Maguire June 21, 2010 at 10:01 PM

@Brad there is a kinda walk through on the t-mobile forums

but heres mine if t-mobile branded

I suggest using windows vista os or previous as win 7 has driver issues

before you start please do a phone factory reset.(make sure you back up you data)

1, download the latest htc sync from here

2, Download the T-mobile Rom from here

3, step 2, will ask for serial number this can be found under the phones battery if you get an error message after entering your serial number then it may not be t-mobile branded so get the un branded rom from here

4, Install the htc Sync

5, connect the phone to the pc and connect the phone to the software

6, run the Rom Upgrade exe/msi

7, This should now install fine for you.

8, Whilst setting up the phone for the first time you should get the ota update go ahead and download and install (Bear in mind your data plan).

9, this should download and install fine for you i was having the ! triangle issue and this sorted it.

Hope this helps you out

Other roms can be found here

266 John Maguire June 21, 2010 at 10:03 PM

@JR from what i gather the version number willnot change until Update part 2

267 John Maguire June 21, 2010 at 10:13 PM

ok i posted a HOW-TO for the update but i don’t know if it was too long but it got removed so i have posted it at one of my sites here

hope it helps

268 philip June 22, 2010 at 9:30 AM

hero on 3 network uk no sign yet 9.30am

269 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 9:34 AM

Have you tried contacting both htc and Three see what they say?

270 Brad June 22, 2010 at 10:08 AM

@John – i hard reset my phone – when i go to update theres a couple of things – 1st the htc sync keeps conncting/disconnecting also the build number is already the same build number as the one that its meant to be updating to in that ROM that i downloaded for the G2 Touch…

so it wont update coz its already up to date.. even though I’ve hard reset?

271 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 10:23 AM

1,ok the connecting and disconnecting have you choosesync with pc from the notifications area on the phone?

2,as for the same version yes mine was the same and it updated.

3,What os are you using?

272 john prise June 22, 2010 at 10:37 AM

thanxs for this useful information :-)

273 Brad June 22, 2010 at 11:02 AM

@John – yea i did i seemed to disconnect when i ran the rom update .exe.. =/

2. ah oaky ill try it again..

3. Android 1.5 build 2.76.110.cant remember #69351 release-keys

274 Brad June 22, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Tried it again, the phone turns off and goes to a white screen with a bit of green text at the top some liek info about the phone or something – then at the bottom are three little skateboarding android symbols
and it stays on that then the update on the pc says that the update faield due to ERROR [171] connection USB terminated

just wont do it.

275 Brad June 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM

@John first post on that forum suggests what could be causing the problem – i reinstalled htc sync – and windows 7 auto installed the drivers… so im disablign that re-installing htc sync and manually isntalling drivers for it…

276 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 12:30 PM

Yes i spent hours with windos 7 trying install the thought laptop that has win 7 and vista installed worked like a charm with vista

suggest win7 is causing your issue now if you can try install on vista

277 Brad June 22, 2010 at 1:52 PM

I managed to do the update, but as of yet no OTA update.. connected to mobile internet + signed into google account.

278 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 2:29 PM

Good to hear have you tried the date trick also as this may need to be done

279 Matt June 22, 2010 at 4:54 PM

I think I’m having the same problems as you were. I’m on Orange UK Contract (Orange Logo on the back). I’m currently on Build, Firmware version 1.5. I’ve been trying to do the ROM update as posted on the HTC site. I downloaded and installed HTC Sync and it usually Syncs ok, but then when I go to install the ROM update it comes up with an error message saying that it can’t connect to my phone.

Do you or anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

280 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 5:41 PM

@ Matt

Matt are you using windows 7 by any chance

281 Matt June 22, 2010 at 5:46 PM

@ John Maguire

Yes I’m using Windows 7. I just tried installing the software again and the drivers manually by following this procedure:

However now it’s not recognising my phone at all. I’m going to try it on my laptop and see if I have any luck.

282 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 5:51 PM

i had same issue with win 7 many many issues with syncand win 7

283 Matt June 22, 2010 at 6:02 PM

@ John Maguire

How did you solve the issues in the end?

284 Matt June 22, 2010 at 7:25 PM

@ John Maguire

Just to give a quick update – I finally got it to work by installing HTC Sync on my old Windows XP computer and doing the ROM update from there and it worked successfully.

285 John Maguire June 22, 2010 at 8:14 PM

that was my solution too i installed via vista i believe that i put that in my walkthrough.

“I suggest using windows vista os or previous as win 7 has driver issues ” maybe people missed this

286 Steve June 23, 2010 at 8:08 AM

To anyone who would attempt the update and get a frozen ‘Hero’ screen. Follow the same steps as the Yellow triangle problem. Reinstall the 2.73 build from back in November or whatever. You have to re-download it as it won’t work otherwise. This worked for me.

287 Brad June 23, 2010 at 8:38 AM

@John – yea i reverted back to normal time – still no update- will be contacting t-mobile and see if ican squeeze a bit of news out of them – will post here if i hear anything…

288 Chris June 23, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Just emailed orange to try find out what’s going on with Orange UK branded phones.

289 Stu Alsford June 23, 2010 at 11:15 AM

@Chris, You’re best of phoning them, going to retentions (end of contract, thinking of leaving options) and then asking to go Direct to the Technical Supprot/Data Support Department. The pions in the level 1 centre literally just have a script, and will say you can upgrade on <> and will be no use!

290 Chris June 23, 2010 at 11:37 AM

@stu I’m sure you’re right but I am at work and really don’t feel like sitting on hold for hours.

291 Brad June 23, 2010 at 12:04 PM

With the retentions department – they usually put you through straight away, if you threaten to leave – as they dont want to lose a customer, also i ahdny thing to remember when dealing with computers and the never-ending cycle of horrible choice option menus

80-% of the time it works – when it comes to choices repeatedly hit ‘#’ until you hear the music (or rining) as it goes straight through to an operator if that doenst work I usually find either ‘*’ or ’0′ works – although ’0′ as last resort as some option menus ’0′ is an option by itself.

Hope this helps.

292 Chris June 23, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Brad, decided I couldn’t be bothered to wait for a response and have de-branded the phone using a goldcard hack ( suggested on another post on this blog. #

Just installed the generic ROM, need to set the phone up now and will report back on progress.

293 Chris June 23, 2010 at 1:31 PM

Worked like a charm. Update popped up whilst still doing the logon to a Google account bit. Once that was done prompted to install which it did 1st time no triangles or anything. APN and voicemail settings where carried over too, can only assume they are saved to the SIM.

Seeing as Orange have done very little to the ROM I highly recommend this! Will do a blog post about it later.

294 John Maguire June 23, 2010 at 4:59 PM

ok update from t-mobile
Recently we released a minor maintenance update for the G2 Touch and we have noticed that a small number of customers were experiencing issues when installing this. After investigating this we have decided to temporarily remove the update. As soon as our investigations are complete we will let you know when the maintenance update will become available.

295 Brad June 24, 2010 at 8:20 AM

Seen it after they tweeted it… leaast we know we cnt get updated yet pft…

296 marlon June 24, 2010 at 10:08 AM

Morning Guys, can you please tell me if the update has been released for Orange HTC Hero users Pay as you go ? Thanks.

297 marlon June 24, 2010 at 10:14 AM

I’m in the Caribbean till Xmas’ using the Turbo Sim with my Locked Orange HTC Hero , all functions work with local network email, internet, etc……….. I,m just wondering if any UK users got the update ( the first one ) thanks.

298 Chris June 24, 2010 at 11:27 AM

@marlon, I got bored waiting to heard from the (lack of) support dept so just de-branded my phone :

299 Ralph Averbuch June 24, 2010 at 11:33 AM

Hi All

In case anyone is in the same situation as me….

I have an HTC Hero bought last October from Amazon UK. So, as far as I’m aware it’s a network free phone into which I put my existing Vodafone SIM.

About an hour ago I checked the phone and had the message about upgrading the HTC Hero firmware with a 4.7MB update. I followed the prompts and all seems fine, with the phone rebooting and returning me to the usual screen.

I now have a new build number 2.73.405.93 which is what the HTC Hero support page says it should be after the update for EU phones (excluding Ireland and Greece which gets .95 at the end and the Nordics which gets .94.)

300 marlon June 24, 2010 at 4:59 PM

I see, thanks Chris.

301 Brad June 25, 2010 at 9:14 AM

T-mobile have released that statement – they have pulled the update until further notice… which is indeed rather annoying..
but I don’t mind waiting tbh… got nothing else to do – not going to risk messing about with the phone in case I fuck it up and as for de-branding… I’m on a contract and don’t fancy spoiling my insurance

302 Drew June 25, 2010 at 9:55 AM

i got my update on my unlocked tmobile hero as posted above by moving the date forward a year. im a noob at this tinkering with fones but i last nite i fancied debranding and getting rid of the t mobile splash screen etc, so i downloaded the generic rom 2.73.405.5.93 version and used htc sync to install it, this worked as the t-mobile stuff is gone and the little green man pops up on boot lol, even before i got on to the homescreen i got the prompt for the update and it installed again fine. i further downloaded a custom rom (neo) renamed it to update and put it and amon ra s recovery image on the sd card as instructed but when i trie to reboot into the install mode i get the triangle notification and the fone stayed like this until i pulled the battery, anyone any ideas what im doing wrong?

303 Brad June 25, 2010 at 12:17 PM

WARNING – Pointless post

Yes, your unbranding your phone.

304 Drew June 25, 2010 at 12:31 PM

as was stressed, i am new to this, the point of my post led to me trying to install a custom rom which obviously didnt work which then led me to ask for advice on what i was doing wrong.

some people have a life , we are not all basement wrist jerking nerds, so your post was pointless as it was unhelpful.

305 Brad June 25, 2010 at 2:58 PM

Indeed – I did warn you. I can assure you I’m not some ‘basement wrist jerking nerd’ :)

I do have a life – a great one in fact – i was simply saying in a very very exceedingly simple way – don’t install custom rom’s – especially if you have branded phone as its branded for a reason – t-mobile them selves digitally sign their version of the software differently – specially for their network as do other networks. That’s why its best to wait for T-Mobile’s official release.
Otherwise you risk the chance of messing up your phone – which is not probably that bad – its just a mega nuisance…

306 John Maguire June 25, 2010 at 3:58 PM

@ all
end of june is drawing near anyone think that it will be delayed??

307 Pete B June 25, 2010 at 5:03 PM

I’ve tried altering the date no luck yet.

I’m on Orange branded phone so probably have to wait another age for them to release the update.

308 miff June 25, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Changing a date to 2011 is work! Start update now.
( Serbia )

309 MaxReHeat June 28, 2010 at 7:42 PM

Sorry for the stupid question, but if i’m asking there arehundreds out there to wanting to know the answer.

If you have seen the update icon and ignored it, DOH!!!!

How can you force the phone to ask fot the first OTA update?

Right seriously I’m on the 3 network any idea what’s going on? I have had no small update to prepare my phone for the larger eclair update, I’ve searched everywhere for answers but I’ve had no luck, do any of you guys know what is happening? Please help :)

311 Drew June 29, 2010 at 8:42 AM

got my 2.1 update lastnight on t-mobile uk unlocked, cant see what the big fuss was about, though it is faster and nokia maps and nav are very welcome.

312 Brad June 29, 2010 at 8:43 AM

@Max – as far as i know – and ive spoken to htc directly and t-mobile – there is no way to force hte update – it will be done automatically 2 weeks after the first attempt – also dont obhte trying the date – T-Mobile have posted a statement saying that they have pulled the update – so as long as you try you wont be able to receive it! as a few people were having problems wiht it not installing (including me!).

@Courtz – from what I’ve read – the 2.1 update (full!) has been released – to unbranded phones – t-mobile and orange are due to be releasing it for theirs in the next 2 days – which is confusing seeing as ive heard nothing about the pre-liminary update being re-sent out after it being fixed… so not sure whats going on there?!

313 Drew June 29, 2010 at 8:44 AM

oh, and i read somewhere that unlocked phones are getting eclair first

314 Brad June 29, 2010 at 8:45 AM

@ Drew – Nokia maps….? on a htc hero? why so?

315 Drew June 29, 2010 at 8:55 AM

@brad , lol, its been a long hard weekend…google maps i meant, my update process took about 10 mins and at one point i nearly pulled the battery, so for anyone getting theirs now just leave it and let it ride, and mybackup lite worked like a charm replacing everything…thankfully.

316 Brad June 29, 2010 at 8:55 AM

@Drew – that is correct as per my previous previous post :( unfortunately – which is fair enough tbh – because carriers need to do their own modifications

317 Brad June 29, 2010 at 9:08 AM

@ Drew – lol forgiven xD – sounds about right problem with mybackup light is i got it (stupidly) when we were told we were going to get update in april – and so my 30 days got used up – so ive invested in it – as since then have done many a flash – and it does work flawlessly! fantastic app tbh

318 courtz1616 June 29, 2010 at 9:08 AM

@brad thanks for the help, I guess Il just have to play the waiting game for a little longer lol

319 Brad June 29, 2010 at 9:12 AM

Unfortunately that will most likely be the case – you could always contact HTC and try and squeeze(extremely hard mind you) an answer out of them… when callign them – use ;D if you don’t know about it already – its an amazing website!

320 Brad June 29, 2010 at 1:17 PM

@Courtz – – this blog just made another post (and twittered it) so i guess its not that long a wait for you :)

321 courtz1616rtz1616 June 29, 2010 at 5:10 PM

@brad thank you for finding that :) although I wish it sooner, I. Don’t mind because its finally here lol honestly thank you :) that was a massive help

322 Brad June 29, 2010 at 5:20 PM

325 Georgy June 30, 2010 at 7:00 AM

Go to Settings > About phone. You should see at the build number if every thing was good.
Now you should get the android 2.1. Go to Settings > About phone > System software update > check now.

Hi everyone,

Some news on the two latest software updates for the G2 Touch.

Firstly, please ensure that you have a backup of any personal data kept on your phone (i.e contacts, messages, applications etc) before you perform any of these updates – as you may lose all data you have stored when you install these updates.

For the 1st update, as some of you know we recently released a maintenance update for the G2 Touch which some people had problems installing. We stopped the update while we looked into these issues but the rollout will continue again over the course of the next few days. Your phone should prompt you to install the maintenance update, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry – you’ll get prompted the next time your phone checks for updates.

If you experience any problems installing the update please download and install the current G2 Touch software which you can find on HTC’s support website. Full instructions for installing the update can be found on HTC’s website . Please note, installing this software will wipe your handset, so please ensure you back up any data you need prior to installing. You only need to install the software from HTC’s website if you encounter problems installing the initial maintenance update. Once you have installed the software from HTC’s website you will be prompted to install the maintenance update the next time your phone checks for updates.

Once you’ve updated your phone with the maintenance update, you’ll be ready to get the 2nd update. We expect this to rollout in mid-July and this will update your phone to Android 2.1 – Éclair. Again, before you install this update you should make sure you have all your personal data backed up.

334 Brad July 2, 2010 at 8:28 AM

@JR whether it works though….

335 Daniel July 7, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Spoke to someone at Orange reguarding a UK release date for the HTC Hero 2.1 update and she said it would not be until 26th July, which is a pain. 1 month after it went live on UK unlocked phones, shocking!

Hey guys, it’s worked for me. I’ve got a sim-free HTC Hero. I’m on the o2 next work. I changed the date of my phone to 15th August 2011. Within a 5 minutes, a message appeared on my Hero, prompting me to update my firmware. I could either click “Update Now” or “Update Later”, I clicked “Update Now”. Immediately the first part of the update process started. It took about 3-5 miuntes for this section of the update to complete.

Once my phone rebooted itself, it prompted me to upgrade my phone to firmware 3.32.405.1 (78.88MB): Android 2.1 Platform Upgrade. It gave me the two download options: “Download via mobile network and wifi” or “Download via Wifi only”. Because I was at home and wifi is so much more quicker than mobile networks, I selected “Download via Wifi only” the clicked Ok. It took 5 mins to download then prompted me to install now – I selected Ok then the installation started. The installation took approximately 30 mins.

I’m now on Anroid 2.1 and I looks awesome.

I had also the question mark after the update. I had modified tiwlan.ini in order to connect to adhoc networks. I restore the original file and it worked.
