3 UK not getting Android 2.1 Hero update till mid-July

by Hero on June 29, 2010

in Firmware

Three HTC HeroIn a blow to those on the Three network in the UK, it looks as if the Android 2.1 update will not be hitting the handset until “Mid to late July” according to Pocket-Lint.

It’s unclear whether a similar delay will be hitting Orange and T-Mobile, although it’s looking increasingly likely. T-Mobile remain quiet on their official forums which could mean the update will release post the end of the month. We’ll keep you posted.

To hell with all those providers, I am unlocking mine and from now on buying SIM free phones!

3 Hero June 29, 2010 at 1:21 PM

Oh, dear looks like an equally long wait then! :(

4 Zaid June 29, 2010 at 1:22 PM

@ TheNewShaft
Yes this is for the first part of the update, thats fine if they remove it, nothing new was added. But now the problem with the 2.1 ROM update which everyone got and happy with, but the idiots are doing there testing .. as they know a s*** !!!

5 Bobness June 29, 2010 at 1:26 PM

You need part 1 to get part 2 – part 1 updated the OTA client…..

6 not_lin June 29, 2010 at 1:28 PM

Can’t say I’m surprised. That’s why I’ve Gold carded my 3 UK Hero THIS MORNING and now have unbranded phone with 2.1!! It’s easy and I can’t recommend it enough. Cheers.

7 Mark June 29, 2010 at 1:35 PM

The impression i get is that the majority of users got the part 1 update OK. So the question for T-Mobile is, can they still roll out the 2.1 update to the majority of users who’s phones are ready to accept it, mopping up the rest once the issue with the smaller first part is resolved, or is everyone put on hold while this is fixed.

I de branded my Orange hand set but my sim was having none of it, saying that it’s locked.
I am STILL waiting for a tech person to call but I have had to flash back to 1.5 orange branded for now as I need the phone.

Going to see if I can get the sim unlock code/a new unlocked sim From Orange when they call.

9 StormIT Web Design June 29, 2010 at 1:41 PM

This is a complete joke!! I spoke to HTC Technical Support yesterday and they told me that branded handsets would be getting the 2.1 update BEFORE unbranded/unlocked, so what are they playing at now!?!? Absolutely ridiculous!! This is such a shame, I love Google Android and think it’s the best O/S out there for phones, but HTC are letting it down time and time again. iPhone 4 here I come…

10 Sam June 29, 2010 at 1:43 PM

Thanks for the update – can anyone who has successfully removed the t-mobile branded ROM in exchange for the standard HTC ROM post a link to some instructions?

11 Ben Rogers June 29, 2010 at 1:45 PM

I bought my Hero from Carphone warehouse which only sell unlocked phones, although I am with Orange for my contract, and my phone received it’s update to 2.1 last night and works perfectly.

12 Chris June 29, 2010 at 1:47 PM

You can follow the instructions on my blog if you want, it does work, just my SIM is locked to Orange hardware! http://wp.me/pSVY3-1c worst case is you have to flash back to the TMo firmware and your maybe an hour down all in. Recommend doing a mybackup (there’s a free demo version in the market) first really does make life easier post flash.

13 Alan Smith June 29, 2010 at 1:56 PM

T-Mobile support (via Twitter) claim that they “do not have any info on 2.1 for the G2 Touch”

A while back when I contacted them, they claimed that 2.1 would be rolled out for the G2 Touch at the same time as HTC did their roll out.

Clearly they’ve just been bullsh*tting all of this time.

Every month, it gets knocked back a further month, so I wouldn’t even trust them if they said “end of July”. I think it’s pathetic that my phone which is only a few months old is one of the most out of date Android deviced you can get.

I had enough of continually moving deadlines, so I’m going to set one of my own …. if I’m still on 1.5 when July arrives, I shall be de-branding my phone and taking the generic 2.1 rom.

Shame I can’t get the T-Mobile logo off the phone itself !!!

14 cashmang June 29, 2010 at 2:03 PM

the cowards should of told us sooner >_>

15 Ollie Fairfoul June 29, 2010 at 2:55 PM

Why are you still waiting?!

Roll back to an old official HTC Rom using the Goldcard method in this guide:
Then either continue following the guide and load one of the many custom roms available here:

Or load the official 2.1 update from here:

If you screw your phone it’s your own fault though :D

16 glenn June 29, 2010 at 3:39 PM

Hello guys im on 3 network and havnt got the update yet if I debrand my fone will my aim still work ??

17 Ollie Fairfoul June 29, 2010 at 3:58 PM

My aim is working fine.. Haven’t missed the toilet bowl in ages :P
I think all the access point names will be included so internet will work. Then you can install AIM from android marketplace if you want to.

Just as a forewarning if you do debrand your phone you will loose all your installed apps and sms. You should back them up with an app 1st.

18 Drew June 29, 2010 at 4:23 PM

i have a uk t-mobile hero, it was unlocked as im now on o2, last week i received the first update but out of curiosity i decided to try and get rid of the t-mobile cr#p from my fone so i downloaded this htc generic rom , RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver (lost the link sorry) used the htc sync and installed it and hey presto it was unbranded, also straight off the bat i recieved the 1st update prompt again and installed it and waited untill late last nite when i did a software check and received the 2.1 update. everything went fine tho it did take about 10 mins. so dont panic if yours does too. REMEMBER as some said above get mybackup lite or pro and backup beforehand, this all worked for me nicely although i am noticing some force closes on some apps etc.

19 Franco June 29, 2010 at 5:10 PM

Hi and first of all thanks for all the posts.
Can anyone tell me how it is possible to de brand t-mobile g2 touch without going through all those complicated steps?
Is it possible to use the method stated above, just downloading the rom from htc?
Thanks guys…

20 Adam June 29, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Hi i have an unlocked tmobile g2 with a vodaphone uk sim should I have recieved the update or not?

21 glenn June 29, 2010 at 5:23 PM

Sorry guys I posted earlier but made a spelling mistake ill try again LOL .. I have a contract with three if I debrand my fone will my sim still work in it

22 Harry June 29, 2010 at 5:49 PM

@Glenn – Yes, your SIM Card should work in any unlocked mobile phone :)

23 sean June 29, 2010 at 6:08 PM

i’m in the UK on T-Mobile and i managed to update today… go to settings > about phone > System software updates then click on check now…. thats what i did :)
it works :)
except im having a problem syncing facebook contacts with “Facebook for HTC Sense”… any ideas anyone? (and before you say restart your phone/remove user data etc, ive already done that)

24 benji-hutch June 29, 2010 at 6:21 PM

Goodbye Hero, hello iPhone

25 Anthony June 29, 2010 at 6:38 PM

Is this the pre update or do you actually run Android 2.1 on your G2 now?

26 Adam June 29, 2010 at 6:41 PM

My tmobile g2 doesnt have that option i go to settings>about phone> there is no System software updates or check now :S?

27 sean June 29, 2010 at 6:44 PM

the phone calls the firmware version “2.1-update1″, so as far as i’m aware it’s 2.1

28 neil June 29, 2010 at 6:44 PM

@adam, you mustn’t have the first ota update pre 2.1, you’ll need that before you eventually get the second full eclair download

29 sean June 29, 2010 at 6:46 PM

I think it is 2.1 because I’ve got the navigation, new marketplace, etc…

30 Hill_Matt June 29, 2010 at 6:51 PM

As promised I had a call back from Orange Tech Support having spoken to HTC themselves this PM (or so they claim). They are saying the update for UK Orange contracts (Orange ROM) will come through HTC not Orange as a FOTA update once Orange sign it off. They have no timescales and suggest that I now contact HTC – for me they have until COP tomorrow (as they promised) then I’ll be lookign for a new Handset and not HTC.

On a related point – is anyone else having real problems making calls on their Hero in the last month? My phone seems to try to dial out but then fails, have to reboot and then it seems OK. Also the phone seems to overheat – and not becuase of the sunshine!!! Any ideas??? Is this linked to pushed updates or am I clutching at straws???

31 Ant June 29, 2010 at 6:52 PM

@Sean is your phone a branded, locked to tmobile phone? Cause the unbranded phones are already getting the update. The branded ones don’t seem to yet…

32 sean June 29, 2010 at 6:55 PM

aah that explains it… it is unbranded
sorry if i got peoples’ hopes up…

33 steve June 29, 2010 at 7:08 PM

If i call 3 CS and get them to unlock my phone, will i get the update? or will I have to install the offical ROM from HTC 1st?

34 Tariq June 29, 2010 at 8:21 PM

Got a HTC Hero, sims been unlocked but still branded on Orange network. If they don’t bring out the update by tomorrow then I’m debranding it and never gonna buy a branded phone ever again!

35 Ollie June 29, 2010 at 8:43 PM

@Franco give it a go and see if it works. Get an official 1.5 ROM from here.
Connect to PC via HTC sync and run the updater. If that doesn’t work then you will need a goldcard.

36 hill_matt June 29, 2010 at 9:13 PM

Further to the above, just received the following email from Orange….

“Just to confirm that we called HTC this afternoon and spoke to the helpdesk.
She confirmed that the software update[2.1 ROM]will be sent direct from HTC in the form of 2 messages[approx 2 days apart].
The customer needs to click on ‘accept’and this will direct you to the download section of HTC and will install the software.”

37 lckf June 29, 2010 at 9:30 PM

good technique by Orange – answering a question you didn’t ask. I believe the question wasn’t *how* the update would come through but *when*.

38 Braidy Johnson June 29, 2010 at 10:07 PM

Is this just me being daft or could you just go on to the HTC website and download the software from there? I haven’t tried this yet. Please let me know.

I’m on a branded Orange device but still haven’t received the first minor update yet!

39 David June 29, 2010 at 10:24 PM

I suspect that if you do that you will find that your SIM will no longer work as it is locked to Orange.

Re. Overheating – I don’t know about overheating (how would you know?) but my Hero has long suffered from random rebooting especially when it’s in a pocket which may be heating-related. Clearly it’s the worst time to reboot because I am not looking at it and can’t receive calls until I have entered the SIM PIN.

I am hoping the 2.1 update might help. If it ever arrives (On Orange contract)

40 Ollie June 29, 2010 at 10:46 PM

@David + @Braidy
If you manage to flash the official HTC rom without a goldcard then it shouldn’t change what SIMs work in it. SIM (CID) unlocking a hero is a very lengthy and different process to updating a rom.

41 Balefire June 29, 2010 at 10:48 PM

I’m on Orange, but have an unbranded, sim-free phone. Had the preliminary update last week, full 2.1 update yesterday. Seems that branded phones need their carrier to sign-off on any update with their extra crap. I’ve not seen a branded Hero yet, so have no idea what difference there is.

I guess you could unlock your phone, install the generic 1.5 from HTC site and try again. Not going to guaranty your phone will work afterwards … :)

42 janko hrasko June 30, 2010 at 12:03 AM

I’m on 3 UK, got the first update as soon as it was announced on this blog several weeks back. I also got the second update yesterday also as soon it was announced.

So I got 2.1 on 3 UK now and it is working perfectly, I am very pleased. Today I tried to upgrade my wife’s Hero, but it no longer works.

It seems to me that the reason for all this wait is that carriers want to force us all to upgrade. Nothing to do with “software testing”, they just want your money.

I will think very hard about my next phone choice!! Fcuk you 3 UK and HTC!

43 Davey June 30, 2010 at 3:39 AM

Loads of information on here which is great, but I’m trying to figure out what exactly I need to do. I have an Orange UK Branded & Locked HTC Hero.

Ultimately I would like to get all Android releases on there, e.g. Froyo, but I guess in order to do that I would have to root the phone which, for me, I think is too risky and scary as I’m worried about bricking the phone or having a rooted rom that doesn’t support all the functions of the phone or contains viruses or something.

If I just want to unlock and unbrand the phone, but still have everything working (not bothered about losing Apps and existing SMS, etc.), what steps do I need to take? I assume that then I will receive the 2.1 update that everyone on an unlocked/unbranded phone will receive. Is that right?

Many thanks

44 Oxygene June 30, 2010 at 6:45 AM

Now, when we have official generic HTC Hero firmware is it possible to install it on t-mobile g2 touch but simple with one click? If yes could someone do a little tutorial with files??? Thanks!

45 Pete June 30, 2010 at 8:28 AM

Hi I sent a e-mail to 3UK yesterday complaining about the update and I received a call back, they said they do have the 2.1 update and they are currently working on it, they said this is a priority as they have had a lot of e-mails and calls over the upgrade. He would not give me a date but would say very soon, he also said it will not be released as a over the air update but will be put on their website (3UK site) for download to save on costs for the user.

So hopefully they have pulled their finger out and realease it in the next few days

46 Sam June 30, 2010 at 8:33 AM

Thanks for the instructions @Chris I managed to gold card last night and am now running Android 2.1. Fairly straight forward just quite a few long (worryingly long) waits with not much happening.

Surprised no built in support for two exchange accounts – I thought this was part of Android 2.1! Still having to use TouchDown to access work exchange email.

47 Ben June 30, 2010 at 9:14 AM

Just had an email back from t-mobile this morning:

“Thanks for your email, asking me about 2.1 Android update release on G2. I’ll certainly look into this for you.

I’m pleased to let you know that we’ll surely release the 2.1 Android software update for G2, however it will be launched once the concerned department tests the software and approve it.”

I thought the question was “when will the update be released”, i already know its definately going to be released i just wanted to know when!!!!

48 Ash Vince June 30, 2010 at 9:27 AM

I have received an email from T-mobile yesterday and they would not confirm to me that we will ever get the Android 2.1 update on the G2.

49 Alan June 30, 2010 at 9:37 AM

Here’s what T-Mobile said to me on back on June 23rd …

I asked …

“… According to HTC, they’ve distributed the 2.1 hero/g2 Rom to t+mob etc. How long are you planning on sitting on it before you release it?…”

They replied ..

… the 2.1 update will be an OTA update and released in line with when HTC release their generic Hero update. Thanks for your patience …

On June 25th I asked ..

HTC said 2.1 for hero/g2 by end of June. That’s next Wednesday. Is it likely?

They replied …

… we have had no news to the contrary from HTC , as soon as we know anything new we will pop out a public tweet …

The clock is ticking !

50 Jamie C June 30, 2010 at 9:46 AM

@Ollie Fairfoul

Many thanks for the links for the goldcard method and 2.1 file. I rooted my t-mobile g2 touch (on contract) last night, ran through smoothly on my windows xp machine (had some issues with the htc sync with windows 7) I really recommend anyone else who is also on t-mobile contract to do the same instead of waiting because all I can say is that it is definitely worth the wait.

I was concerned about losing my contacts but as you have a google account set up for the phone the contacts should be synced with your account and can be downloaded once you put the new firmware on. If like me you have the unlimited mobile internet with t-mobile then it does pick up the settings automatically once you’ve installed the new firmware.

I say go for it! :D

51 Davey June 30, 2010 at 9:58 AM

@Ollie Fairfoul

To follow the guides, does your phone need to be already unlocked or unbranded, or can I take my Orange UK contract phone that’s locked and branded and follow the steps?

Are there Orange settings that need to be applied, e.g. things like the number for voicemail, network identifiers, etc. – I don’t know how all this works – it might be stuff that’s on the SIM – I don’t know.

Many thanks.

52 Nick June 30, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Meh… dunno what all the fuss is about, at least it IS coming :)

53 Mobilephonereviews June 30, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Is T-Mobile ready to roll out the 2.1 update to the majority of users who’s phones are ready to accept it. To follow the guides, does your phone need to be already unlocked or unbranded.

54 Ollie June 30, 2010 at 11:26 AM

No that tutorial is for a locked and branded phone. Voicemail numbers and APNs should be picked up automatically.

This other tutorial seems a lot simpler for creating a goldcard.
Thanks to Chris from earlier for posting this.
Don’t go onto step 2 – rooting the hero (unless you want to load a custom rom) and instead flash the official 2.1 update from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679180

55 Ollie June 30, 2010 at 12:02 PM

Gash wish you could edit comments. Actually instead of flashing the 2.1 you could just wait for the OTA update. You will need to root your phone for manually flashing 2.1.

56 Tom June 30, 2010 at 12:09 PM

Soo.. If the t-mobile g2 gets the 2.1 upgrade, where should I look for it for download? Tmobile website or htc website?

57 jamie June 30, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Hi everyone,

Some news on the two latest software updates for the G2 Touch.

Firstly, please ensure that you have a backup of any personal data kept on your phone (i.e contacts, messages, applications etc) before you perform any of these updates – as you may lose all data you have stored when you install these updates.

For the 1st update, as some of you know we recently released a maintenance update for the G2 Touch which some people had problems installing. We stopped the update while we looked into these issues but the rollout will continue again over the course of the next few days. Your phone should prompt you to install the maintenance update, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry – you’ll get prompted the next time your phone checks for updates.

If you experience any problems installing the update please download and install the current G2 Touch software which you can find on HTC’s support website. Full instructions for installing the update can be found on HTC’s website . Please note, installing this software will wipe your handset, so please ensure you back up any data you need prior to installing. You only need to install the software from HTC’s website if you encounter problems installing the initial maintenance update. Once you have installed the software from HTC’s website you will be prompted to install the maintenance update the next time your phone checks for updates.

Once you’ve updated your phone with the maintenance update, you’ll be ready to get the 2nd update. We expect this to rollout in mid-July and this will update your phone to Android 2.1 – Éclair. Again, before you install this update you should make sure you have all your personal data backed up.

58 Dave June 30, 2010 at 2:31 PM

So … mid-July … that’ll be approx 3 weeks after HTC started their roll out.

What exactly are they doing with it for 3 weeks ?

Pathetic … truly pathetic ….

59 Dave June 30, 2010 at 2:33 PM

Note the way they say … “We expect this to rollout in mid-July”

.. “expect” .. that gives them a getout clause to delay it even further, or potentially not bother at all.

60 Andy June 30, 2010 at 2:33 PM

Mid July *harrumph*

61 Andreas June 30, 2010 at 3:56 PM

Hmm im on 3…well mid july then eh? Ive bene waiting 6 months so i guess i can wait another 3 weeks. by the way,how does it happen? do you get an sms message or you have t obe connected to internet?

62 Derek Doom June 30, 2010 at 4:20 PM

I’m using the hero on three UK.I was using a rooted tmobile G1 before but I thought that I would follow the legitimate update process as I have this one on contract. But I’m tired of the constant delays so I followed the method posted her: http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/goldcard-2

Setting up the gold card is very straightforward thanks to this tool. I just used mybackup free from the market to backup my apps and data to the SD, mounted it and copied it all over to my PC where I dropboxed it (just to be extra safe). All my contacts are synced through gmail anyway.

I installed the generic RUU (be sure to read the readme file) and the moment my phone rebooted I got an update message. Nice :)

Now to get the full 2.1 update and see if I can get skype on three working again.

63 Oxygene June 30, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Mid July? Maybe mid-August maybe at the end of this year? T-mobile is rubbish! We will never got it, maybe be they skipped 2.1 for 2.2 next year? :|

Is there any other option to have generic update without golden-card?

64 Derek Doom June 30, 2010 at 5:22 PM

Success! And completely painless. Although strangely now can’t get the marketplace to work. The T’s and C’s pop up for a moment and then it closes, anyone else experience this?

65 Zaid June 30, 2010 at 6:26 PM

You know what they doing with it? They just keepin it for more time so you get fed up and pay the the 15£ to unlock your phone and get the undat on air.
I trully believe this is the case, as HTC did the test for the past 6-7 months now, and there is no reason at ALL to delay it even further.
But they will not even dream of that 15£ and I already created a post there in their website, I am leaving them, without paying or finishing my contract, let see what they can do about that!!
Give your voice there please:

66 Derek Doom June 30, 2010 at 6:57 PM

@ Zaid,I’m pretty sure most carriers will not unlock a handset until you’re out of contract anyway. But if you use the goldcard method and flash the generic htc rom to your phone you should be able to continue using your tmobile sim. I rooted a tmobile g1 before and installed a custom rom and I was still able to use the sim. I think the only implication will be that tmobile won’t offer you support and will refer you instead to HTC if anything goes wrong. And sure if it doesn’t work you can just get the old tmobile rom from here and install it with HTC sync: http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownloadList.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=2

67 Derek Doom June 30, 2010 at 7:02 PM

You need to use the goldcard method to install a generic rom on a branded handset. But the goldcard method is a piece of cake and technically reversible. If it doesnt work for you you can just reformat your sd card and reinstall the carrier-specific rom. (they are all available from the htc support site). Its a lot more straightforward than routing.

68 Derek Doom June 30, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Sorry, ‘rooting’.

69 stu June 30, 2010 at 8:22 PM

t-mobile have made a new announcement

“Once you’ve updated your phone with the maintenance update, you’ll be ready to get the 2nd update. We expect this to rollout in mid-July and this will update your phone to Android 2.1 – Éclair. Again, before you install this update you should make sure you have all your personal data backed up.”

70 Davey June 30, 2010 at 8:30 PM

Where did all the expectation of upgrades come from in the first place. I bought my Hero (well, signed up for on Orange) knowing it was 1.5 and hoping for the 2.1 but not guaranteed. If we get 2.1 finally, I guess people will start asking about when 2.2 will be available for the device (even though Sprint etc. have ruled it out). When you buy a Windows Mobile phone or an iPhone or Blackberry, do you have the same upgrade expectation? Certainly service packs and patches to fix bugs, but not an entire OS upgrade. My last 2 phones were Windows then Blackberry and I never even got a bug fix for anything.

I’m looking forward to getting 2.1 on my Hero, don’t get me wrong, but I’m just questioning why people think that they are entitled to it. Or am I missing the point and people are just fed up of waiting for it because it’s actually been promised for so long? But that would rule out Froyo requests as that’s not been promised.

71 Zaid June 30, 2010 at 8:39 PM

@ Davey
Yes mate we do expect to get the upgrade when we buy an Android or iPhone mobile phone. The idea of buying them is the customization and the app in their market, and mainly they are a software product not a hardware. Android and iPhone mobile case is nothing, a piece of metal and plastic, the whole thing is with the software.
I can easly buy an Nokia or Motorola phone, but I choose Android so that I stay in touch with all the updates without renewing my actualy mobile!
Do not get me wrong and I am not offending you or anyone here, but if you buying an Android or iPhone for another reason that this, then well you missing the point!
Google have and still been a free company, pushing their updates for everyone, and you can see that from the different customized ROM (software updates) in the internet. The issue is that we have such stupid network providers which start deciding which mobile get what and when.
Hope this make things clear. And please everyone, go to this link below and add your complain and comments, I am trying to make a point and maybe we have a CHANGE!!

72 Davey June 30, 2010 at 8:54 PM

Point taken, thanks. I was just wondering – I didn’t know the deal with the iPhone. I know we don’t get the same deal with Windows on the PC, but I do with Ubuntu on this laptop – it upgrades when the next version comes out. But then my laptop can handle the processing requirements of the new version – I figured that phones are running their hardware to the limit of the OS at the time – hence they’d struggle with the new versions or have to have cutdown versions of the new software.

I understand what’s causing the delays and I understand why the carriers want to verify that their tweaks work before issuing software that doesn’t even boot, etc. The three layer process from Google to HTC to Orange|T-Mobile|3 etc. is frustrating.

Many thanks for not attacking me too heavily ;-)

73 Zaid June 30, 2010 at 9:08 PM

@ Davey
Hahahaha no mate will never do that .. actually feel sorry if I was harsh, its just today I was shocked by t-mobile email after 3 days contacting them and getting the same results (we know nothing about the 2.1 update), today they decided to hold it another 3 weeks :(
Anyway, I do believe in hardware limitation, but just have a look in youtube to see G1 (first android phone) running on 2.2 Froyo ROM. This is where our lovely t-mobile said the Hero will not get the 2.2 because it wont be able to handle it!!
I think I am gonna jump from that 5th floor library I am sittin in now :P

74 GadgetStu June 30, 2010 at 9:48 PM

UK T-Mobile Customer

Extremely miffed with T-Mobile so I tried Ollie’s suggestion in post 54 – although I only needed to do the first part: http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/goldcard-2

Big thanks to you Ollie, just unpacking the 2.1 update now :)

75 Davey June 30, 2010 at 10:41 PM

Where were you hiding this … this is the official ROM from HTC, someone help us here, what we do with the .zip file please?

77 Chris July 1, 2010 at 12:23 AM

well I goldcarded my phone and flashed the Rom with the generic one (I am locked into t-mobile) – it all worked (although I had to install via an old XP laptop) but still no 2.1. I have also noted that if I unmount my SD card Windows 7 no longer notices it (but XP does) – so go figure? Anyone have any ideas who it’s not updating?

78 Brian Morrison July 1, 2010 at 1:43 AM

Well, you ask about why some of us think that HTC should provide updates for older devices like the Hero. I think it’s quite simple. These are modern smartphones, and yet they did not, and do not, support all of the things that are needed for secure and convenient use. I knew that an update to at least 2.0 was coming when I bought my Hero, but I didn’t know they would just decide not to go any further.

Try getting the Hero to work with self-signed SSL certs on mail servers, or even those signed with root certs that are not recognised. Try to get it working with a large proportion of the Bluetooth devices that support phone book access (PBAP). These things don’t work, and there is no voice dialling with Bluetooth either.

All of my recent Nokias or Sony Ericssons supported these things for at least the last 4 or 5 years, if not even longer.

If Google wants Android to really be taken seriously, then it needs to be feature complete. I believe that this is supposed to happen with Android 3.0 but they will need to backport this stuff to 2.2 to support lower end devices.

So, that’s why I think that it’s only fair to upgrade people to the point where their devices actually do what it says on the tin.

79 steve July 1, 2010 at 6:40 AM

I have done the goldcard as set out above, very easy, now on 3uk running 2.1

80 Jamie July 1, 2010 at 8:51 AM

t mobile date change works now got part one.

81 Oxygene July 1, 2010 at 9:34 AM

Forget T-mobile branding, goldcard procedure is very simple, now I have generic firmware, thanks everyone here! JUST DO FIRST STEP, that ALL!!! Goodbye T-mobile…

82 Pete July 1, 2010 at 10:18 AM

Come on Three pull ya finger out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

83 thomas July 1, 2010 at 10:20 AM

Changed date this morning, offered update (first one) – t-mobile UK (un-touched)

84 Davey July 1, 2010 at 10:58 AM

@Ollie (post 55)

Some people are saying that they can run Step 1 and then the OTA update hits e.g. posts 74 and 81.

Is that all we need to do? Just run Step 1 then wait for the update?

85 Zaid July 1, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Guys please READ THIS by:
Davey June 30, 2010 at 10:41 PM
Can we use the file that’s linked for download at

Can someone please walk us through the process of the .zip file, what we should do, its the 2.1 ROM from HTC without waiting the stupid t-mobile, but how we run it?!

86 Dunc July 1, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Yes, all you need to do is run Step 1, up to downgrade using Generic RUU. I did this yesterday after frustration with T-Mobile finally peaked, once you’ve installed the generic RUU you’ll get offered the updates straight away, well worth doing!

I’d say it took me about an hour total including downloading the updates and installing everything, just make sure you back up anything you want to keep as it will wipe your data.

87 H July 1, 2010 at 1:03 PM
88 Chris July 1, 2010 at 1:16 PM

got the first part of the update :) – except when I install it I get the warning triangle :( . I am running the Generic Rom – do I need to re-flash to the t-mobile rom for the update to work?

89 Chris July 1, 2010 at 1:45 PM

I can get the dowwnload for the 1st update if I roll ofrward to August but I just get the white triangle of death :(

I am running the generic rom – I think it is a Rom issue – the question is, do I flash my rom to the t-mobile specific rom (i.e. back to where I started before I goldcarded the phone) or do I flash it with the 2.73.405.5 EU rom (http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=671) as HTC seem to suggest that this is needed for the first FOTA update?

If no ones got any ideas I’ll try both tonight and feedback ….

90 Stu July 1, 2010 at 2:30 PM

Put your goldcard back in your phone and try applying it again. I think it is erroring as that is only a temporary path, so once that SD card is out, it will see the phone as a branded device.

(I haven’t actualy gold carded so I am reiterrating what I have seen, I have just got orange to give me a brand new handset due to other issues I had!)

91 Chris July 1, 2010 at 3:56 PM

@ Stu

Thanks Stu, it sounds like that was my error removing the goldcard and putting my normal SD Card in. I will try it tonight when I get home – fingers crossed :)

92 Franco July 1, 2010 at 5:20 PM

i did the think with the gold card on my g2 touch and worked.
Now i am trying to install the generic rom from htc but without any success. Keep on giving errors ( says drives up to date on my win7) but once it goes to the boot menu (g2 touch) win7 won´t recognize it so the update stops. ( i did install the drivers )
Any ideas?

93 Ben July 1, 2010 at 6:05 PM

@ Zaid,

I know – I saw this! It looks fairly cosha….theres an boot.img and radio.img file in there – which I think (and I am in no way an expert, quite the opposite!) are what need to be on the SD card for the phone to recognise it. But I dont know what exactly you do to install this.
Come on – someone on HTC Hero blog must know how to get this running!
But I do wonder Zaid – where did the person who wrote this article get this from? As it is not available for download on the HTC site.

94 Zaid July 1, 2010 at 7:27 PM

@ Ben
I know that Ben, thats why I was trying (since yesterday) to find someone to tell us if its fake or not, does it work or not …
Excuse me here HTCHEROBLOG man! Could you please help us here, what is that link? Is it real? What we should do with the .zip file please?!

95 Thomas July 1, 2010 at 7:44 PM

I tried to to the update the other day, it failed badly (White Triangle with Yellow Explanation point). Looking at the error – it seems that the firmware was at fault (it seemed to be looking for a different version). I called T-Mobile UK and was met with “AN update you say?” – they passed me through to tech support and I had to guy THEM through the required list to get the update and apply it (it failed for them to) – they were stumped and would call me back at some point in the future…

I kept failing on the flashing of the rom, I tried on both WIndows 7 32 & 64bit Windows – I ran a virtual machine on XP SP3 – it worked straight away. I tried to flash the same t-mobile Firmware, this failed. I then made a goldcard, flashed RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe – the phone had NO t-Mobile branding, first update came and WORKED then after a reboot – 2.1 started to download….

96 Alex July 1, 2010 at 7:55 PM

No T-Mobile branding!!!! What I’ve always wanted. How, How.

97 Max Marroni July 1, 2010 at 7:58 PM

Here’s a quick & easy guide to update to 2.1 on T-Mob, 3 or Orange:

Any chance of a post of this from HTC Hero Blog? Pretty Please! :P

98 Alan July 1, 2010 at 9:28 PM

@Max Marroni, Ollie et al

Followed the instructions and now have my ex 1.5 G2 Touch is an unbranded 2.1 Hero !

T-Mobile SIM still works fine, with voicemai etc etc still working as normal.

1. Get the goldcard app direct from the writer from here http://www.klutsh.com/main/index.php?/files/file/9-goldcard-tool-v005/
2. Do it on an XP box … I tried on a Windows 7 box and failed to create GoldCard
3. Make sure you use this ROM RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
4. Make sure your phone is well charged … give yourself a good hour to get it all done.
5. Don’t worry if you think anything has stopped …. it hasn’t … be patient.

Enjoy 2.1 !

99 Anthony July 1, 2010 at 9:31 PM

I’ve refrained for so long, keeping good faith that T-Mobile and HTC would release Eclair several months ago…

Now I’ve finally given up and rooted my phone. I wonder why on earth I never did it earlier. No more T-Mobile branding, and no more T-Mobile BS.

100 Oxygene July 1, 2010 at 9:33 PM

LAST TIME; do the goldcard trick! Downgrade, and do 2.1 update it is very easy, don’t do the other method they are not 100% sure, and firmwares are hacked (that’s ok) but with this method you have got all 100% HTC!!! GO and forget branding and 1.5!!!

101 Anthony July 1, 2010 at 10:17 PM

You’ll find I’ve already done it :)

102 Chris July 1, 2010 at 10:20 PM

Woot! managed to upgrade at last.

Goldcarded the phone as above and flashed it with the 2.73.405.5 EU rom (http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=671) – as soon as it was done I got the two updates and have got Android 2.1 – fantastic.

It also got rid of all the t-mobile splash screens :)

OK, now for Gingerbread …. :P

103 Franco July 1, 2010 at 11:36 PM

I used the same method stated above…
Now just need to find out if was this worth the wait… specially with the wi-fi problems that i had on 1.5

104 Oxygene July 2, 2010 at 6:32 AM

I did debranding on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, no problems at all. In the phone I chose sync and then get CID, hope it helps.

105 Colin July 2, 2010 at 8:46 AM

I got sick of waiting for three so i gold carded and put a custom ROM on my phone last night. The one thing i will say is invest in a kingston 2gb as three scan discs didnt work for me. As soon as i had flashed phone to generic HTC software i was offered the official download but flushed with success i decided to press on and managed after a few hours to get a custom ROM loaded. I will say if i had 3 tips they are.

1 Take your time do some research on the internet and dont panic

2 Use a Kingston sd card

3 Perform wipe before loading custom ROM

106 Minimos July 2, 2010 at 9:54 AM

Thought I would give some feedback for those thinking about de-branding from a 3UK phone.

The gold card method works, it is quite simple and I’m now running 2.1. I would recommend getting a separate SD card to goldcard saves having to copy data from your current card to and from the pc before and after flash
Skype and Windows Live Messenger works on the new firmware when downloaded from the Three website, if you try and install them from a Mybackup archive they will fail at the sign in process, simply visit the three home page and install from there, works perfectly.
Spotify works from the Mybackup if you managed to get the offer when Three were giving these out so you won’t loose your access to this app.
Just to note backup using Mybackup before the goldcard method even if you think you do not need some apps or can remember what you had, just covers you from slap head moments of oh, forgot about that data file or setting moment after the upgrade. Tip, installing from the MyBackup will mean you do not get the app listed in the My Downloads section of the Market, you need to download again for it to appear here and notify you of updates to programs. Minor point but worth sharing. Also paid for apps can not be backed up by MyBackup which take me to the point below.

Now the one downside is a bug I have found with Android Market not the firmware. I purchased an app, then the monies were refunded to me by the company as part of a promotion. The details all show in Google Checkout but when I try to download from Marketplace I get a message informing me I have had a refund and need to purchase again. It looks like the 24 hour return functionality is kicking in when in fact my refund was a promotion where I kept the app.

I would not let the above point put you off though as it will happen with the official 3UK update as well. Its annoyed me because Google do not offer end user support for market place and you are encouraged to post in a forum but from viewing there are lots of similar issues like mine reported from various phones re market place with no follow up from anyone at Google. To be honest its quite disgraceful they do not look at resolving these issues and puts me off purchasing any more apps through market place.

107 MeanEYE July 2, 2010 at 2:19 PM

If you ask me… It’s better you didn’t get it…

It is nicer and smoother… and it doesn’t work… Bugs everywhere…
My contact sync stopped working 2 days ago… what the hell am I suppose to do now?

108 Adam July 2, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Finally manage to get the pre 2.1 update sorted. Even though my phone had the same rom as on the htc website apparently i had to update using the 1 on the website and then the update works fine with no triangle of death :D

109 cashman July 3, 2010 at 7:16 PM

This is getting boring now….what are you playing at 3!

110 mark July 4, 2010 at 1:12 PM

dudes, just chill out, u will get the update eventually, why would u stress about it so much. im with tmobile uk, installed 1st update yesterday and waiting for the next one, we will get it this month, dont worry

111 cashman July 4, 2010 at 2:14 PM

I know but I’m just like a big kid really XD

3uk users are still waiting for the first update :’( I guess they might come as one part instead of two… maybe

112 Adam July 4, 2010 at 2:14 PM

Well tbf we have been waiting for this update for like a year or something now has it been? and 2.2 is already out for the newer phones we might as well just root to 2.2 now and get it over with. These heros are barely over a year old and they are already stopping support for them seems a bit lame.

113 Drew July 4, 2010 at 5:43 PM

Used the Goldcard method on my 3UK branded hero today, worked perfectly, thanks to all the early posters below.

114 Israr July 5, 2010 at 4:44 AM

Used the Goldcard method on my 3UK branded hero today, worked perfectly. Is there any manual available online for this.
Planet 3 is missing?
Setting–> Accessibility option can’t be enabled?

115 Davey July 5, 2010 at 7:20 AM

Do you have to unlock the phone before goldcarding and debranding? Phone is locked and branded to Orange.

If I do have to unlock, I assume I have to go to one of those web sites where you buy an unlock code – is that right?

Many thanks

116 Ant July 5, 2010 at 8:04 AM

@Davey no you don’t have to unlock your phone to gold card it. And once you have installed the generic Rom you will still locked to the same provider.

117 Andreas July 5, 2010 at 10:45 AM

Hmm 3 still hasnt put it live yet.

I ws wondering what is your build number mines is 2.73.771.73 but HTC website has a different one

I think but is newer, but not sure..

118 mysticegg July 5, 2010 at 11:20 AM

Still waiting for the first OTA update (T-Mobile UK Contract).
Current build: CL#69351 release-keys

Is anyone else still waiting?

119 mysticegg July 5, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Should also add that I’ve tried changing the date to August for a couple of hours, but the 1st update didn’t appear.

120 Pier July 5, 2010 at 3:40 PM

Try changing the year to 2011. Leave it alone for about 5-10 mins and you should be prompted to update. Afterwards change date back to correct year. Simples!

121 Andreas July 5, 2010 at 4:09 PM

@ Pier

What network is it on?

122 Oxygene July 5, 2010 at 7:14 PM

@mysticegg we are not waiting because we used to trick t-mobile g2 touch and now we have generic 2.1 yuppi! Try goldcard.

123 Adam July 5, 2010 at 8:54 PM

@mysticegg Did you try what i posted earlier and update from the website (even though its the same build) seemed to work for me.

124 mysticegg July 5, 2010 at 8:58 PM

@Pier Thanks! Just changed my date to 2011 and I got prompted to download the firmware within 30 seconds. Phone rebooted, 5 minutes later I’m on Build CL#154725 release-keys

Just like you said – Simples! :D

125 mysticegg July 5, 2010 at 9:00 PM

@Adam That was going to be my next plan!

126 Mike July 5, 2010 at 10:56 PM

I’ve got an ex-Orange, now O2 contract after unlocking, Hero which is still on the 1.5 firmware. I’ve had no messages at all about upgrades – surely some mistake? Or should I find an interim upgrade for my O2 phone?

127 Stu Alsford July 6, 2010 at 8:13 AM

Your phone would still need the orange update, which still has not been released, although, for you as you are not on orange, the orange branded stuff that may be included would be useless to you, so may be worth gold cardding and going generic. (I’d do this if I didn’t have a warranty, or, if I didn’t have a habit of having faulty phones [7th phone in 3 months now...]

128 Mike July 6, 2010 at 12:21 PM

Thanks very much for that – yeah, it’s still Orange branded on booting up – so if I gold card it, can I still use my O2 contract and SIM/mobile number? It’s an eBay phone so it’s worth the risk…!

129 Ian G July 6, 2010 at 1:20 PM

I’m a little confused.

I’m about to update my locked Orange Hero to 2.1, but the goldcard instruction says:

“Click the link to open the goldcard generator, copy the CID from the tool into it. You will get an email.”

Email?! To which account.. or does it mean a notification on the phone?

130 Happynow... July 6, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I have my Hero with UK Orange. Got fed up of waiting for the official 2.1 update. So, used the Goldcard link from this forum to trick my phone into thinking it was unbranded. Then loaded the generic HTC ROM (ends in 4.5.5). There is a link to it at the end of the Goldcard process.

Once my phone booted with the new ROM it was half way through taking me through the initial set up process when a notification appeared about the first 2.1 update and did I want to download it? You bethcha. After installing it rebooted and as soon as I had a wifi connection another system update notification arrived. Yes, please…

It took a while, and at one point appeared to have got stuck, but it rebooted with new splash screen etc. (quietly brilliant). But then came a problem.

It told me that I needed a “SIM Network Unlock PIN”. Aha, I thought, jumping onto the Orange website and grabbing my PUK number. It didn’t work. I rang Orange – no clue as to what number this meant. I tried 1111, the default, and it said it needed an 8 digit PIN.

I did some more googling and discovered that the radio files in the 2.1 update cause Orange lock-ups. Quite a few people with this problem.

I didn’t want to get into Rooting the phone and flashing radio files from a command line, so I bit the bullet and went to HTCCode.com who, for twenty US dollars sent me a code.

I entered the code and it worked, or rather it took me a stage further. It was now asking me for a SIM security PIN (or something similar). Aha, here’s where I bang in my PUK code. Nope.

So I try 1111 and it asks for eight digits again. The only other 8 digit code I have is the one I just received from HTCcode. So I enter it a second time – and it works!

Phone unlocked. Android 2.1 for twenty bucks. I should have waited, I know. But it throws a bit more light on why Orange can’t just release the generic update – because they tinkered with the original ROM in the first place, Orange-ising it.

I can now get my Freedom Bluetooth keyboard and mouse working and my Hero has become the mini-computer it asways should have been.

Good luck…

131 neil July 6, 2010 at 7:38 PM

@ian g

it’ll prompt you to enter an email address and send the code to it

132 Frederik July 7, 2010 at 7:28 AM

Finally got the update last Friday, well the first one anyway. Let’s see when the next one comes.
(I’m located in Belgium, we always have SIM free phones.)

133 Pete July 8, 2010 at 8:34 AM

Come on 3UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

134 Andreas July 8, 2010 at 11:34 AM

@ Pete

+1! 3UK is taking a piss now!

135 Ben July 8, 2010 at 11:47 AM

@ Pete and @ Andreas

Orange are also taking the piss, no sign of the update for Orange yet!
Or am I wrong…can anyone enlighten me?!
I will Goldcard if it is not here within the next 10 days! Before anyone hassles me to Goldcard now – I literally have no time to at the mo!

136 steve July 11, 2010 at 7:09 PM

Three UK must think about it like this. Most smartphone users don’t care if they have an up to date is or not and just want the phone to work, I wonder what the percentage of hero owners in the uk actually care about an update. I’m mentally into tech and ensure all my gear is up to date, I flash psps, xboxs, wiis, turn pcs into macs, used to unlock phones of all types but with this I just could not be arsed, relying on their farcical release dates. If it comes it comes.

137 pete July 12, 2010 at 8:22 AM

Still nothing on 3UK? :-(

138 Sir July 12, 2010 at 4:14 PM

3UK – got fed up waiting and ‘gold carded’ it + installed generic 2.1 ROM. It really IS that easy.

All seems to work fine.

139 Pete July 12, 2010 at 8:57 PM

Me too, just done the same, really easy, wish I’d done it earlier

140 Davey July 13, 2010 at 2:49 AM

How reliable the source is, I don’t know but (for Orange UK):

141 Pier July 13, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Hi All,

Feel sorry for all you guys with branded phones still waiting for the 2.1 update. Really sucks. Try and gold card your phone to unbrand if you feel confident then load up generic rom.

I have had 2.1 for a couple of weeks now (unbranded Hero) and it is pretty damn good although it doesn’t reinvent the wheel.

New marketplace, newly available apps, new UI tweaks, Google navigation :) .

No live wallpapers on HTC Hero 2.1…be warned.
Some force closures on apps… i have reinstalled the ones i want to keep and this seemed to do the trick.

Going forward, apparently Froyo will not be made available on the hero, let alone Gingerbread….so this looks like it will be the last OS update for our little hero.

So far the update has appeased me enough to delay going down the iPhone route……I really do love Android…..and who knows my next phone will still probably be an Android one.

142 rick July 14, 2010 at 9:49 AM

come on t-mobile, where is the update!

143 Pete July 15, 2010 at 10:20 AM

@rick goldcard it m8, its really easy, took me about 10mins, and that was really taking my time to make sure everything was right.

144 Nick Hurst July 15, 2010 at 10:43 AM

Any word on word when the legit release is coming? I can’t be bothered with this gold card business at the moment, well not if a legit release is coming in the next week or two…

145 Nick Hurst July 15, 2010 at 10:43 AM

From 3UK I meant to add…

146 jamie July 15, 2010 at 12:30 PM

tmobile branded 2.1 released today manually check. am currently downloading ! !

147 tedd July 15, 2010 at 1:24 PM

Yeah its out boys!

148 Ben July 15, 2010 at 1:42 PM

Where is it out? How do you manually check?

149 Stu Alsford July 15, 2010 at 1:51 PM

Being on Orange, and not even having the prep update…

Go to settings, about phone, there may well be a check for update or something.

Hope that helps, I am guessing blind here though.

150 Davey July 15, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Orange users don’t have a check for updates option – well, at least I don’t – if anyone else does, let me know. Someone, somewhere said it checks for updates automatically every 2 weeks. :-(

When I know it’s out for orange, I’ll probably factory reset and it should pick up the updates straight away, I guess.

Check out http://androidforums.com/groups/orange-users-143-orange-htc-hero-eclair-update-page6.html for Orange info.

151 Davey July 15, 2010 at 5:31 PM

T-Mobile update coming through now!!!

152 Ryan July 15, 2010 at 6:15 PM

Yeah its out guys, just as i was about to goldcard :)

153 Emeyep July 16, 2010 at 9:25 AM

I set the date forward to August on my Tmobile Hero yesterday and after updating and installing the part 1 update over the air, it then did the same for the part 2 update.

TBH I was very impressed, but I was running over a very good HSPDA link. I didn’t lose anything other than a few icons off the sense menu. Everything else was still there, all apps, contacts, photos etc. In the short time I’ve had it. things seem much improved with Android 2.1 – if looks and feels much slicker – it no longer feels sluggish. :)

154 Stu Alsford July 16, 2010 at 11:09 AM

RUMOUR has it it may be out today at noon on orange!

155 Alexis July 19, 2010 at 3:37 AM

guys.. super confused here being a total noob. read through the thread but still not sure what I should do. I’ve got a tmobile g2 touch, which I bought off eBay and unlocked. am now on o2 pay as you go. my firmware is currently 1.5.. how do I update to 2.1?? am dying to get it.. can someone help me out here with some pretty straightforward steps? would be much obliged. cheers droids

156 N00b.Newb July 19, 2010 at 8:04 AM

It is worth trawling through

At least T-Mobile has a discussion forum where things are happening. 3?, they are still sleeping.

157 Alexis July 19, 2010 at 11:21 AM

thanks n00b.newb am trawling through but its missions.. still confused as to what i should do.. anyone?

158 Ben July 19, 2010 at 12:06 PM

@ Alexis

You could try a factory reset – this should prompt it to search for updates and you should then get the first update.
This is a slight guess – I am on Orange and alas I have no update yet :-(
But it should work.

159 Alexis July 19, 2010 at 1:18 PM

Okay guys, downloaded the ROM upgrade from HTC website for my T-Mobile, installed fine and thought I had then downloaded my 2.1 upgrade as when I switched on my phone I got asked to update it which I then did, but am still on 1.5 firmware, but my build is up to date. have now got that check for updates in about phone but it says there are no current updates.

again on unlocked t-mobile g2 touch with an o2 sim. will having the o2 sim affect whether or not i can receive the update? grrrr.. getting annoyed with all this business…

160 killa cameron July 20, 2010 at 8:27 PM

You bell ends – this is a discussion about 3 UK not ORANGE or T-mobile.

For the umpteenth time, we know you chumps on T-mobile are able to get 2.1 but putting the date forward.

READ THE TITLE and spam elsewhere!

161 ant July 20, 2010 at 11:09 PM

killa you need to chilla, have nice cup of tea and a sit down.
although the title doesn’t make mention of orange or tmobile.
if you’d read the article it does.

I like you am keen to find out when the update for my hero is due…but i don’t see the point in getting so riled over whether someone is “spamming” as you say, or not.
anyhow, did i mention that I’m on orange and the date roll forward doesn’t work…. ;-)

I’m beginning to wonder whether the damn update will ever be rolled. I may just bite the bullet ditch the best phone i’ve ever owned and invest in a nexus one or desire.

162 Allee July 21, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Lazy 3uk (contract).
Still no update.
I dont own a pc so ota is my only option for an update.

163 N00b.Newb July 21, 2010 at 3:42 PM

I have ordered a refurbished hero from 3UK. I am told that they do not have stock until 30th July.

I was wondering if they are holding it until they get the Android update? I wish they would send it with version 1.5, so that I could gold card it

164 peter July 21, 2010 at 6:47 PM

hey noob ive just (last week) got a hero of 3, why do you want a refurb, just get the normal one

165 N00b.Newb July 21, 2010 at 7:39 PM

I am told that they are as good as new. Also they are a steal compared to new ones. Also, after 6 months, I will throw all caution to winds and make this my guinea pig.
Now, that’s cunning or what? :-)

166 ronnie July 21, 2010 at 8:21 PM

I have had a refurb phone from 3 and it lasted 4 months worst thing i ever did i then cancelled my contract and got a new 1 with htc hero

167 N00b.Newb July 21, 2010 at 9:27 PM

@ronnie : Was your phone insured?

I hate being tied to a phone on contract (it’s boring to be tied to a phone for 2 whole years), that’s why I am going for a refurb on PAYG.

168 Gundam July 23, 2010 at 10:21 AM

Come on 3UK!! :( :(

169 Stu Alsford July 23, 2010 at 1:54 PM

Please check this group out and sign up, i hasn’t even been going 2 days and has 300+ members!

170 imperticus July 25, 2010 at 9:57 AM

The moderator on the official 3UK blog wrote this on the 22th July. “2.1 for Hero is still being tested and we’re still on track for it to be released by the end of July. Not too much longer to wait now.”

171 amster July 25, 2010 at 11:47 PM

nice one!

172 cashmang July 26, 2010 at 8:38 PM

come on 3uk you have like 4 days to go :)

173 ginger July 27, 2010 at 12:53 AM

The latest comment from the moderator is:

our update will come right at the
end of this month. We’re going as fast as we
can in the testing, but things have taken a
little longer than anticipated. The update will
be OTA.

174 Jason July 29, 2010 at 3:01 PM

Still f#ck all from 3, where is the incentive to buy branded phones? NEVER again will i go with 3, it’s Sim Free from now on.

175 ginger July 29, 2010 at 3:16 PM

@Jason: check the 3 UK HTC blog via the link provided by imperticus above in Comment #170. The Moderator on there works for 3 and has been providing some info about when & how the update will appear. Basically, they are working on it, it will be out by the end of the week, and it will be delivered as one OTA update – a notification will appear on your Hero when it is ready.

176 Andreas July 29, 2010 at 3:19 PM

@Jason yup so pissed off now! if it isnt done by monday im rooting my phone and 3 can go and ………

Orange has an update, Tmobile has one but 3 is still testing! what a joke!

177 N00b.Newb July 30, 2010 at 7:25 AM

Have cancelled my order with3 for the Hero. I am going for a Desire, SIM-free.

178 cashmang July 30, 2010 at 2:19 PM

you have one day left 3uk, one day

179 Allee July 30, 2010 at 3:04 PM

It better get to us soon.
No 3 and contract ever again.

180 Nina July 30, 2010 at 4:20 PM

What a joke 3 mobile is, what testing is there to do? Bunch of bull, Last 3 contract and will not recomend to anyone. Stay clear everyone, loyal customers get treated like dirt, more like any customer after the contract has been signed

181 ginger July 30, 2010 at 5:57 PM

the 3 UK blog has a post from the 3 product manager. testing is complete, submitted to Google for final approval.

182 imperticus July 30, 2010 at 6:08 PM

Looks like the update may not be coming in July after all. Here’s what the product manager, Brendan Arndt, had to say:

“We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.”
“We really wanted to get this to you for the end of July, but we’ve missed our deadline – I’m really sorry I can’t bring you better news on a Friday afternoon but at least you’re now in full possession of the facts. “

183 WigglePig July 30, 2010 at 6:20 PM

Oh, what a surprise.

184 Gundam July 30, 2010 at 10:59 PM

business is business…..
No 3 and contract ever again!
haribo 3 uk

185 Haris July 31, 2010 at 9:31 PM

It’s All A Lie!!!!!

I Have Just Spoken To Three (UK.)
They Said ”There Is No Update!-Please- Wait- For- Late- Augast-!
I Am Shattered :/

186 Haris July 31, 2010 at 9:37 PM

Sorry I Mean’t *”*

187 Ben August 2, 2010 at 3:04 PM

What the hell….

Every single post / comment about Android 2.1 on the official 3 website has been deleted.

Got no way at all now of getting info I’m well cheesed off.

188 Gary August 2, 2010 at 5:33 PM

Yes Ben, I can confirm that to be the case, I have been following and adding to these threads for a number of weeks now and they have either been deleted, or hidden, as I can’t find anything now.

I think the whole thing is an absolute disgrace, the content of the statement on Friday was nothing more than rude and discourteous to all HTC Hero users, it may have well have just said tough, you’ve been pushed to the back of the queue, while we deal with the important stuff that makes us money.

Unfortunately when I signed up in February of this year, I signed up for 24 months, but I can assure you that once that time is up, I will never use 3 again.

189 N00b.Newb August 2, 2010 at 9:48 PM

Shouldn’t the 3 users unite and put up a facebook forum, like Orange?

190 steven August 2, 2010 at 11:03 PM

i had the htc hero for all off 5 hours and 2 hours of that as on the telephone with three who now say they are not brining out the 2.1 update and if they do it will be the last resort.

so bin the htc. even on three.

191 ginger August 3, 2010 at 12:08 AM

Sounds like some people have gotten their info mixed up and are going into meltdown. The android version that won’t be available on the Hero is 2.2. Version 2.1 WILL be available shortly. It has been tested and is waiting for approval from Google (whatever that means). I don’t represent 3 but the latest official info is on this blog:

(or the other Hero threads on that site)

192 ginger August 3, 2010 at 12:13 AM

The url for the 3 UK site (without the line breaks) is:

(sorry – typing this on a Hero)

193 colin August 7, 2010 at 7:07 PM

I am trying to goldcard my t mobile hero and install 2.1, but the link earlier on in the thread isnt working, i managed to download part 1 but part 2 is not working. anyone know where to get the part 2?

194 Gundam August 23, 2010 at 11:31 PM
