by Hero on July 15, 2010

in Firmware

T-Mobile UKA couple of weeks after the GSM HTC Hero received the Android 2.1 update, it looks like those with branded phones are finally starting to see the update coming through. T-Mobile is pushing the update as we speak, so if you’re on the network check your phone right now!

Any news on Orange Hero update to 2.1? Will it be worth the wait?

2 Ryan July 15, 2010 at 8:19 PM

Downloaded whilst at school today(wifi hotspot) at one point i thought i had bricked the phone as it was stuck on a new white htc screen. Just be patient and make sure you have at least 25mb available.

3 Wilbur July 15, 2010 at 9:09 PM

Installing now. Can’t believe it’s finally here.

4 Gavin Hamill July 15, 2010 at 9:36 PM

My T-Mobile G2 is still at 1.5 – I’ve never tried to force the ‘first stage’ update on it… should I just get a popup at some point telling me all is well + good?

5 Mark July 15, 2010 at 10:15 PM

I’m using an unlocked GSM Hero in the US. Any chance I’ll see the same OTA update to Eclair? If not, any advice as to where I can find a download, short of rooting and loading a custom ROM?

6 Ryan July 15, 2010 at 10:21 PM

@Gavin just change the date to august then change it back, you should be prompted with the update seconds later :)

7 Adam July 15, 2010 at 10:25 PM

Just got it :D

8 jamie July 15, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Anyone have any idea about three mobile updating?

9 Jason July 15, 2010 at 11:55 PM

done mine now and I love it! in retrospect I’m glad that tmob played with this rom as iv seen reports stating problems with the phone functionality after the new update. this is not the case with the tmob version!

10 far July 16, 2010 at 7:26 AM

Got it yesterday and im really happy with it, it much faster and better looking

11 Martin July 16, 2010 at 8:58 AM

My G2 is still on 1.5 as well. Tried changing the date to August and back but still no update, any other ideas??

12 Mick July 16, 2010 at 9:40 AM

I had a call from a three Tech Support rep last night, and he was avoiding my main question (“When will three HTC Hero customers receive the Android 2.1 update?”) by saying that the update is being worked on, and he couldn’t provide a date as to when it would be ready, but I should keep checking the website…..

Not impressed by three – and I had previously rang HTC CS and they confirmed that all UK suppliers got the 2.1 update at the same time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you ’3′ – the best 3G network – but the worst customer support…..

13 MeanEYE July 16, 2010 at 9:45 AM

@Mark: Not sure if you’ll get your update. I only know after I got mine it worked just fine for a few days and then the problems started (contact sync, notification sounds, etc.). Also HTC decided to remove whole bunch of features, like Live Wallpapers, Navigator Menu, Voice Search, etc. Did I mention that it’s painfully slow memory hog?

As for rooting, there’s a complete guide here: http://villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
Also, I am using VillainROM 12 which is based on GSM Hero 2.1 firmware but with all the nice things that should be included. Apart from few built-in applications (Facebook, 3D Gallery and ROM Updater) this ROM is fast, stable and eats less battery. Also, ROM comes with kernel that supports overclocking. At the moment my Hero is configured to work on 320MHz at minimum and 612MHz on demand. This makes my phone use less power if needed speed increases, resulting in snappy experience.

Since we are not going to get 2.2 you might as well root your phone now. If you do upgrade to 2.1 you can *NOT* root your phone. I had to use GoldCard method (explained in that guide) to downgrade and then root it…

14 MeanEYE July 16, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Oh, I forgot, VillainROM 12 can be downloaded from here: http://villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=95&t=1807

15 Nort00 July 16, 2010 at 10:09 AM

I spent ages yesterday just trying to get the small update to work but keep ending up with the exclamation mark.

Bit frustrating!

16 Tom July 16, 2010 at 10:43 AM

And only 6 months late! What a useless company, im starting to hate T-mobile!

@MeanEYE they really disabled all those features!?

I had to use the goldcard method just to install an update form HTC to get a generic bloody rom to work! haha

If VillainROM has better performance and more features i might, after waiting all this time for the generic rom update just put VillainROM on… Is there any comparisons anywhere? so i can make my mind up.. could i Root my phone and “test” out the generic Rom update Vs VillainROM?

17 LycraLout July 16, 2010 at 12:28 PM

Fed up being stuck on 1.5 when everyone else has been off it for ages. When I got my Hero, it was flagship. Now only fit for the knackers yard. Takes the piss.

18 Dave July 16, 2010 at 12:48 PM

Just got the update. Went to settings / about phone / system software and pressed check.

downloaded, it rebooted and installed (took about 10 minutes) then on first start up it it took about 3-4 minutes doing something else (no idea what) but it gave a percent count.

That was it.

19 Dave July 16, 2010 at 12:49 PM

“I spent ages yesterday just trying to get the small update to work but keep ending up with the exclamation mark.”

You need to apply or re-apply the update on the HTC website first.

20 ianio July 16, 2010 at 1:46 PM

Ha, spent two weeks reading forums, Mocado, xda dev etc trying to downgrade, root and update my tmob hero. I finally acheived this yesterday and now find t-mob have actually gone and done something.

i dont care tba, i may even try the villian rom if it is so good.

so many nice touches to 2.1 that never got mentioned. like the camera controls, the extra buttons on the phone screen, page transitions, weather effects, the glossy icon-ic-ness-ness. etc etc etc.

21 John July 16, 2010 at 2:01 PM

Well I must say it was worth the wait. Downloaded quickly over wifi, took a little while to install. However once finished the phone runs smooth as. Especially if you add the animations to the menus. Looks very nice. Everything works well and is an improvement over the previous software with a few nice extras thrown in. I am very impressed and am glad I waited for it. I know it’s taken T-mobile ages to relase this but most networks have to add some branding to their phones and then test it to ensure it works first time so non-techy people can install it without problems. Don’t forget people they add branding etc to make more money from us and again to help the less techy people out there!

22 Raj July 16, 2010 at 8:50 PM

The best and assured way to get to update is to download htc sync, the latest Rom upgrade from htc website ( R) and install it to the phone. Once that is done you will immediately get the first update that takes the phone to Then, you have to check for updates in the software update menu and you will get the prompt for 2.1 update. Install it and the phone will be I had the wwe 2.1 update that was installed via gold card, but reverted to this because the camera was always out of focus with that one, at least for me.

23 rfox July 16, 2010 at 11:46 PM

Does enyone can confirm if there (2.1) animated .gif is working?

24 rfox July 16, 2010 at 11:53 PM

Oh, i forgot. And.. are there blue tooth compactibility with PC and other mobi is working..
If don’t.. goodbye android.. and welcome symbian..or..or..WM :/

25 nort00 July 17, 2010 at 10:58 AM

@Dave – thanks, after lots of fiddling with HTC drivers under win7 64 I managed to install the release and all the other updates.

26 Ike July 17, 2010 at 6:21 PM

WOO! My update is downloading this very minute!! As happy as I am, I hope both HTC and T-Mobile sort themselves out because loyal customers should NEVER have to go through what we’ve all been through to get updates for our phones!!!

27 Kallum July 17, 2010 at 6:36 PM

Updated the Phone, took about 15 Mins on ‘H’ Connection, Looked nice for a change but I dont like the Black styled Widgets, I dont really know what the fuss is about really. I honestly Prefer 1.5 and wish I can go back now. I restarted the phone due to laggyness and now its been stuck at the G2 Touch T-Mobile logo for the past hour. Great work…

28 Kallum July 17, 2010 at 6:38 PM

Update: Took the battery out as a last resort and It is loading up now, Is there anyway I can go back to 1.5?

29 ralf July 17, 2010 at 7:36 PM

throw your phone out of the window, and u will be back to android 0.0…

30 Andy July 17, 2010 at 9:49 PM

You can get ‘search by voice’ in the market. Doesn’t have any other voice input eg in messaging tho.

31 onerobnorris July 18, 2010 at 11:09 AM

is anyone having problems with the battery life since the update??, mines not even lasting the night with out charging the phone up??

32 Rich July 18, 2010 at 1:39 PM

Could anyone please help me?
I’m trying to update my G2 touch, but I can’t find any way to, after I told it to update later the first time it popped up.

I can’t see an option to check software version in the About Phone section.

Any ideas?

33 Rich July 18, 2010 at 2:22 PM

After having “updated” my phone, it is in no way different at all. My firmware is still 1.5 and everything looks EXACTLY the same. But when I check for updates it tells me there isn’t any.

34 rfox July 18, 2010 at 3:09 PM

Maybe you receive info that you haveupdate for ALREADY INSTALLED Programs from MARKET. and not the firmware. check this out again.

35 Vicki July 18, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Having the same problem as Rich above “updated” my phone, it is in no way different at all. My firmware is still 1.5 and everything looks EXACTLY the same. But when I check for updates it tells me there isn’t any.”

HELP!! So frustrating!

36 cribology July 18, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Can anyone tell me how to root/install a rom on my Orange Hero that does not involve using the Home key? As the home button on my htc does not work.

37 Bing Killsmith July 18, 2010 at 5:46 PM

I wasn’t having any update joy but a hard reset fixed it.

38 cribology July 18, 2010 at 5:52 PM

The lack of Home button means I cannot do this step;

“Turn the phone on by holding down Home and Power till you get to the custom recovery screen.”

Is there any other way to get the custom recovery screen.

39 Andy1103 July 18, 2010 at 6:10 PM

Have run update and now have but still 1.5 firmware. Software update says this is phone up to date.

40 Kallum July 18, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Guys dont bother updating, it RUINS your battery life, I charge mine as much as my fathers Iphone now, it is rediculous.

41 Rich July 19, 2010 at 2:38 PM

HTC have responded to me saying that this initial update is purely to give everyone the option to search for new updates. The actual firmware update will be pushed through once everyone has this current update, as they can only push one through at a time.

42 Van July 20, 2010 at 9:17 AM

i honestly dont know how you guys are getting this update?

I changed the date, nothing happened.

Went through t-mobile website which redirected me to HTC, and again, nothing on there.

I also went to settings, about phone, but theres no option to check for update?

Can anyone help?

43 Peter Johnson July 20, 2010 at 11:01 AM

to summarise the current situation for people trying to work it all out, as I had to.

a ROM update was released 2 weeks ago, as a “bridge” to 2.1. This added an improved “You Tube” client and the ability to request an update from the settings menu

If you get a large yellow triangle when trying to update, you have the wrong version of the 1.5 ROM. You need to have the 1.5 ROM on your phone available from the HTC site, not the Tmobile version which is also called 1.5.

Some people (on WIndows 7 64 bit for example) have found the HTC sync software wont let them change the 1.5 ROM on their phone (although it syncs contact info etc, the rom update process says it cant see the phone) the easiest solution to this is use another PC on an earlier OS to change the 1.5 ROM.

having done that the first update should install correctly.

A second update (to 2.1 itself) was announced on Thursday, accessed through the settings/about phone/system software update menu

it has worked for some people but many are complaining that it wont update for them, particularly since Monday morning

Tmobile claim to be “aware of the problem” and “looking into it” on Monday, although they were really no help with any of the above issues, for which I have my fellow forum members to thank for their assistance.

at the time of writing:
Tmobile tweeted that the ROM was available on Thursday, but not that there was a problem

Tmobile have not edited their forum posts about ROM availability to show that there is a problem, thus sending many hundreds of people on a wild goose chase again.

44 Matt Findlay July 20, 2010 at 12:35 PM

Thanks for your update but Van has a point.

You said “a ROM update was released 2 weeks ago, as a “bridge” to 2.1. This added an improved “You Tube” client and the ability to request an update from the settings menu”

But for goodness sake why can’t anybody TELL US WHERE THE HELL to get the initial ROM update from? What’s the difficulty, it’s stupid.

45 Jeff L July 20, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Agree that it seems a bit SNAFU.

I got the initial OTA update yesterday (improved YouTube client). This downloaded and installed fine. But now I’m not prompted to update to 2.1. Even if I go into About Phone and manually check for updates I’m told my phone is up-to-date. Changing dates seems to have no effect either.

Conversely guy at work with the same phone did the update over the weekend all the way to 2.1. Only difference, that I’m aware of, was that he had to download the T-Mobile ROM from the HTC site as he got the yellow triangle error on the initial OTA update. I didn’t get the error or have to download the ROM from the HTC website.

Hope someone finds this of help.

46 Ieuan July 20, 2010 at 6:35 PM

I’ve had the following response on twitter from TmobileUKhelp via direct message:

Hi Leuan, excellent, if all goes well the mass rollout of 2.1 begins tomorrow for G2. If you don`t get anywhere with this let us know :-)

Thanks! I’ll be in touch tomorrow to let you know if it’s worked
10 minutes ago

Hi Leuan, keep the date forward until tomorrow, please visit http://bit.ly/G2latest for futher information as we recently posted an update.

Nope, that didn’t work

Hi Leuan, if you set the date on your phone forward by approx 6 months, this may be enough to prompt the update, can you let us know?

@TmobileUKhelp G2 Touch: just got OTA update to firmware, how do I now get update to Android 2.1?

47 Mahfooz July 20, 2010 at 9:27 PM

What about us 3UK users? Has anyone heard from 3 yet?

48 rfox July 21, 2010 at 6:41 AM

May I dare to ask. T-mobile croatia.. WHEN????

49 Alex July 21, 2010 at 12:02 PM

Tmobile UK G2 Touch downloading now.

If there is no voice search, then I will be angry.

50 Alex July 21, 2010 at 12:26 PM

Your all going to love this T-Mobile customers.

All that I can see that has changed (It hasn’t fully loaded up yet) is on the lock screen there are added features like time, date etc

BUT AN ADDED BONUS, THERE IS ANOTHER T-MOBILE LOGO ON THE LOCK SCREEN SO I CAN SEE T-MOBILE EVER TIME I UNLOCK MY PHONE. It was the branding that delayed the upgrade of the phone so why add more.

51 Jeff L July 21, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Following on from my previous post, after manually checking for updates again (12:51 Wed 21st July) with my system date and time set to the current date and time, I’m finally downloading the 2.1 update, over 3G so could take a while. Let’s see how it goes…..

52 Van July 21, 2010 at 1:40 PM

I put the date forward to december and i got prompted to donwlaod the update, it went to do it but then i got the yellow exclamation mark. Does anyone know what that means and what i have to do?

53 Jeff L July 21, 2010 at 4:50 PM

Now running 2.1. But as mentioned by others battery does seem to be taking a hit….

54 ryan July 21, 2010 at 5:38 PM

@alex voice search is available for download on the app store ;) and my battery life is fine, i dont see what you guys are moaning about!

55 Alex July 21, 2010 at 11:57 PM

Initially I was a bit disapointed. The battery has definitely suffered. Acording to Android task manager, I only had 30mb of memory when 1 app was open compared to like 70mb. The phone always crashes. Contacts deleted and now not syncing to facebook. Pictures that were backed up in a lower quality. Why have the cool wall papers gone? why does it always crash!!!

Its worth it

Please can anyone recommend some new Apps for me that we couldn’t previously get on 1.6/1.5 (can’t remember)

Got twitter, Google Goggles and voice search, Any other cool ones?

56 Alex July 22, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Anyone help?

My phone keeps on crashing and then starting itself up again I just left it and didn’t touch it and it still did it.

57 Tomi July 22, 2010 at 12:37 PM

Any1 got the g2 OTA update in Hungary?

Magyarországon valaki megkapta már az OTA frissítést?!

58 rfox July 22, 2010 at 6:31 PM

T-scum croatia tell me that 2.1 “probably” will be released till the end of july.
if don’t.. goodbye t-#@%$& and welcome generic htc !

59 Timo July 23, 2010 at 9:29 AM

Anybody else got the Facebook sync problem?
It says I can sync, but it just doesn’t do it.

If anybody has a solution, please let me know, there are more people out there with the problem, as you will see when you google “htc hero 2.1 facebook sync”

Apart from that.. I’m not all that happy. The new icons are ugly. Next time I buy an android phone I go for a clean one without custom skin.

60 Tomi July 23, 2010 at 1:29 PM

@Timo Have you read xda’s forum? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698551

I’ll Quote:

Ok I have looked for this trouble in the forum and on Google already, and I see I am not alone, but the only answers I could find are : “no bug for Facebook sync in Sense with 2.1, does work for me”, “remove and re-ad your account and sync, might be long”.

Well… actually… no it does not work.

The fact is, I have tried a few 2.1 ROMs, and I couldn’t make it work on any of those, including the last official taiwanese 2.1 release : only the profile pictures are synced, but nothing else : no statuses, no events, no facebook albums, including mines, and cannot upload pictures… very annoying

So… maybe the problem is not on my HTC Hero with Sense on Android 2.1… and I was right.

So here is THE fix :

1- remove your Facebook account from your Hero.
2- In Facebook, Application Settings, remove all HTC Sense applications (I had 2, maybe one for Sense with 1.5, other for Sense with 2.1).
3- On your Hero, re-add your Facebook account.
4- Fixed

First sync might take a few minutes, depends on your network I guess, but not hours like I have read in some other threads…

Sorry for my not so good english, and I hope this fix has not been already given so I don’t look like a jerk ^^

61 GFerguson July 23, 2010 at 3:09 PM

Hey Everyone , Anyone know how to get the Android 2.1 Update for T-Mobile G2 Touch on O2 UK or even if I will get it .
Reply ASAP!>

62 Amit July 24, 2010 at 9:28 AM

Still (im)patiently waiting for something, anything, even a message of some sort for my Orange UK HTC Hero….NOT HAPPY.

I’ve tried the changing date thing again just incase, switched phone off and on but did anything happen…NOPE, NADA….ZILCH happened.

Seen the update on my friends HTC (unbranded)…looks good.

If anyone knows of any updates for Orange UK users pls lemme know.

63 JJ July 25, 2010 at 12:20 AM

Finally got my 2.1 update on my G2-Touch from T-Mobile. Didnt get anything when trying through the settings. Just changes the date to september, and the 1st stage update downloaded (although I already had that a few weeks ago). Took an age to reboot, but as soon as it did I got a notification of 2.1 and was asked if I wanted to download. As I was already on 2.73.x and couldn’t be arsed to try and root, I have okayed it.

Lets see if it was worth the wait……..

64 Chris July 25, 2010 at 12:31 AM

My Hero is T-Mobile branded but I’m now using it on Three. Can I download the update from the HTC site? When I go there and enter my serial number it says ‘software download is not suitable for your device’, which makes me doubtful.

65 Chris July 25, 2010 at 12:37 AM

Sorry, I’ve been stupid there, I was looking at the wrong update. The Android update on the HTC site says it will be pushed autpmatically. So now my question is – can/will I get it OTA on Three, or can I put a T-Mobile sim card back in and force an update?

66 FAHAD MIRZA July 29, 2010 at 10:00 AM

hello guys.
1. CHANGE UR DATE ROM 2010 TO 2011

67 Davor July 29, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Yeah, that’ll only work for those of you who downloaded the preparatory update unlike us T-mobile Croatia users. I’m on vacation now, as soon as I return home, I’m rooting and putting up VillainROM because this is ridiculous. We waited forever to get the update and now we don’t even get half of the cool features because of “performance concerns”. VillainROM (as I’ve read) has all of those features and works smoother than 1.5.

68 Kyle August 3, 2010 at 3:15 PM

I have a mate with the same phone and network and his has updated but mine is showing no sign of even trying.
I’ve changed the dates several times also.
I don’t even think I’ve had a single update at all since I got this phone.
HTC can go f*ck themselves, I used to really love the phone but the customer service is useless and my phone has just had too many problems.

69 Neil August 5, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Not impressed with the update so far from tmobile. Yes, the front-end has been tarted up a bit but the phone is more sluggish now, txts take longer to send and a lot more of my txts get bounced than before.

Some of the updates (e.g. the mobile wallpapers or whatever they’re called) seem to be a little more than the hero processor can handle.

Wish I hadn’t bothered.

70 Bernard August 7, 2010 at 10:35 AM

Kyle and those who cannot update from 1.5. I solved the same problem by doing a pc upgrade with the firmware on HTC website. After that my phone could pick up OTA from t-mobile. I am now on 2.1.

71 Jay August 8, 2010 at 1:36 PM

can any1 tell me, if i upgrade to 2.1 do i lose everything? (apps, contacts, layouts etc) if you do i dont think i can be bothered 2 up upgrade coz every1 seem 2 hav problems nd it dont seem worth it!

72 Bernard August 9, 2010 at 12:48 PM

Yes you will loose the apps, contacts and layout. You can re-sync your contacts if they are saved on google server. About apps I do not know if there is a way to back up, maybe re-install everything. The update seems to have improved the icons and ….I don’t know

73 Aidan August 9, 2010 at 3:05 PM

I don’t seem to have the menu option:

settings / about phone / system software

any idea how I can get this back?

74 Jess August 9, 2010 at 6:36 PM

Aidan – I am having this same problem.

Anyone have any suggestions???

75 kerry August 10, 2010 at 1:31 PM

@ aiden and jess

i was having the same problem as you guys, i found that when i reinstalled the current firmware i had from the HTC website, i was prompted via my phone to update it again, which then made settings/ about phone/ system software availible

hope that helps

Hello guys!
I just upgraded my HTC hero to Froyo 2.2, It is really awesome better than Eclair2.1.
Very good battery performance and speed.
If anyone want me to help installing Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2, I am available. Thanks

78 Jay August 29, 2010 at 4:54 PM

ive decided 2 update 2 2.1 now but cant seem to do it! i haven’t got the update thing in the settings so went on htc to download the up date off there like every1 suggested on here but it wont let me download it, says its not suitable for my phone! can any 1 help please!

79 phillip french September 3, 2010 at 12:39 AM

I was running 1.5 on t-mobile htc hero and wanted the 2.1 update. after hunting all over the net for two days, i found that all you have to do is set your htc’s time to the year 2012 ( any day or month) and it will AUTOMATICALLY start downloading the update to prepare for 2.1,.. once this is done you have extra options in the settings menu, one of them is “search for updates” choose this, and you have 2.1 (it takes a couple of hours to complete)
