Three gives vague timeline for HTC Hero Android 2.1 release

by Hero on August 3, 2010

in Firmware

HTC HeroThree has just released a statement saying that it expects Google to approve the Android 2.1 release for HTC Hero handsets in the next two weeks. This may help to placate the angry HTC Hero owners on 3, some of whom have set up a facebook page demanding the release. The short statement from Three is attached below.

Three has now tested and approved the 2.1 update for HTC Hero and it has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can approve it within the next 2 weeks and then we can start updating Three customers with HTC Hero’s.

Another two weeks … argh!

At least it’s looking like it will actually happen.

2 Bren James August 3, 2010 at 5:16 PM

What about people with unlocked UK HTC Hero’s?

3 David Fhu August 3, 2010 at 5:31 PM

Will that apply to user in Singapore? If not, I will just switch to Motorola Milestone or Motorola Milestone XT.

Sorry for the disappointment. I have waited long enough!

4 cashmang August 3, 2010 at 8:54 PM

so with 2.2 coming to the desire next weekend……..

so yeah cool thanks for that…..3UK! stop trying to pullin new customers try and look after the ones you already have!

5 WigglePig August 3, 2010 at 10:01 PM

So Three, given that you clearly knew you would have to submit the update to Google foe approval why were you posting comments late last week that you hoped to have it out by the promised end-of-July? This is either a serious lack of competence or an attempt at deception.

This episode is only making a lot of people very angry and rather more likely to churn. What are you going to do to make it up to us?

6 Mark S August 4, 2010 at 10:45 PM

The losers at 3 are really taking us for mugs and have now shifted the responsibility on Google – citing the lead time that it’ll take Google to approve their modified version of android 2.1

What I find unbelievable – is how up until the last minute, they were promising us this update before… the end of July – then on the 31st of July – they tell us… We’ve just handed it over to Google.

So they now predict a 2 week lead time before Google approve the 3 version… BUT HOLD ON… if this is the case, then for release end of July – they should have submitted to Google by the middle of July….

I mean, it’s laughable that they’ve led us down the garden path like we’re idiots, only to put it back again.

I thought HTC were bad – perhaps they’d had a masterclass from 3UK… :/

Appalling service.

7 diamond m August 5, 2010 at 1:53 AM

They have been been takin the hero users as a mugs, forget 2.1 they need to give us 2.2. Eclair 2.1 is now out of date if you ask me. 3 crapy network needs to pull their fingerd out fast.

8 Nick Hurst August 5, 2010 at 9:24 AM

I gotta say I will be sticking to HTC in future but not Three…. I hope their customer services department reads some of the comments here and feels ashamed…. on this update being last makes them the worst network in the UK I think….

9 Pip August 5, 2010 at 1:39 PM

They won’t take notice, they will carry on being a crappy provider only looking after their precious JesusPhone4 customers because it will pull in more revenue. Tell me 3 UK: What happens when, in two months time say, a better phone comes out than the JesusPhone4 . Will you forget about your JP4 customers? Because by rights and past events, you should… Idiots!!

10 andysuth August 5, 2010 at 7:55 PM

I just spoke to 3 uk about my Hero: it still has 18 months of the 24 month contract to go.

I get reception/transmission problems where a Samsung Galaxy (on 3) and a SPVM3100 (also on 3) don’t have any problems.

The Manager in Technical Help has stated several times (to talk to my disbelief) that:

“3 UK have no firm plans to release Android 2.1 on the Hero, this does not mean it won’t come, but it does mean I won’t commit to the release date or whether it will be released.” (Or words to that effect).

I further spoke to HTC who told me:
“The Delay is with Three, we can’t issue ANY Rom Updates for 3 UK users of the hero as the ROM would have to be customised for Three.”
I did point out the HTC shifting deadlines with Android2.1 and the fact HTC Hero UNBRANDED phones work on 3. None of which matters.

Three & HTC are REALLY annoying me.

I might actually right a strongly worded letter.
“I might actually right a strongly worded letter.”
Woooooh – easy tiger :)

12 RFox August 6, 2010 at 3:17 PM

Shut up man. I’m on t-scam croatia, and there is no any word of update is coming.
I’m waiting long enough. First thing i’m back from vacation is de t-scuming my htc hero (g2 touch) and fill it with htc generic firmware. Or maybe, vilian rom.

13 allee August 7, 2010 at 1:39 PM

villainrom ftw.

14 Trydon August 7, 2010 at 6:30 PM

Whats the big deal, 1 month, 2 weeks, whats the rush? Its just a phone. If you didnt like the version of Android on the phone why did you buy it in the first place? Its still usable…. AS A PHONE, AS INTENDED. You dont expect microsoft to give you a free upgrade to there new OS every time they release one do you?
You should be gratful your getting it at all.

And yes, i am waiting for 2.1. No i wont gold card my phone. I dont give a rats ass weather its in 2 weeks or 2 days.

15 RFox August 7, 2010 at 9:02 PM

Tnx, allee… :)
I writing on a g2, and was pissed off. :/

Trydon.. it is NOT just the phone.
It is almost hi end, hi cost phone who is NOT bluetooth compactible with other phones, and hav NO option to play or not to play animated GIFs in the internet browser.
Two of MAIN functions i use very often. And that simple two of functions HAVE almost all low.. low.. demn low cost phones.
So, you must understand why i’m disapointed.
Android is an excelent OS .. BUT.

16 Shinsen August 8, 2010 at 8:39 AM

Trydon, here’s the deal though. The firmware which 3UK HTC Hero phones run is 0.9:1 identical to stock HTC Hero unbranded firmware. People who have debranded their phone and are now running on the stock HTC Hero firmware can use the network just fine. There’s no need to have special firmware for 3UK, their network is actually somewhat decent (unlike some carriers, looking at you: Orange) despite the fact that coverage is still the number one problem with the carrier. So we wouldn’t be in this mess, 3UK wouldn’t have to put in all this extra work and customers would be much happier if 3 just used stock firmware. Stock firmware which can be network locked without the need to change the Software Version, thus barring people from updating their phones the moment HTC; which already does extensive testing, pushes out the update.

And I can’t stress this enough, 3UK has made this extra work for themselves. It’s like me painting a wall and making a contract with you that only I can re-paint this wall. I’m not as large as other wall-painting companies and I have other, newer walls to paint. Older customers then want their wall painted as a new colour has just come out. I’m too busy painting other people’s walls to paint these customer’s walls and they get upset, people get left with a colour they’re not happy with. Sure, it’s liveable, but the paint’s showing signs of age and there’s a better colour which they know would work well on the wall already out there. They can’t do anything about it, they have to wait for me to come along and paint their walls. And why should they when the person who made the wall is all that willing to paint it for me, but this contract says he can’t. Silly, isn’t it?

I have a HTC Desire which was Virgin branded, they didn’t seem to know anything about the recent 2.2 update for my phone. Once again, this is just a carrier making more work for themselves, the 2.2 update itself already has a carrier-select screen which has “Virgin Mobile” on it… And this is stock firmware. So why exactly did they change the software version and bar the stock firmware from working? Again, the firmware was near-identical to the stock EU firmware for the Desire, it just had a Virgin bootscreen and a Virgin bookmark on the home screen (which are completely cosmetic changes). It completely blows my mind that companies make extra work for themselves, but if you question them on it they give you some crappy response like “maybe when T-Mobile updates their phones” or “we’re a small carrier we can’t move any faster” THEN STOP MAKING WORK FOR YOURSELVES YOU KNOW YOU CAN’T KEEP UP WITH.

One last point, 3, if you’re having problems testing firmware and don’t want to use stock firmware, completely saving yourself this problem, why not open up the testing to your wider community? Make the software update opt-in, allow people who are aware of the risks take the plunge and report back bugs to you. Open Source projects (like the Android OS) rely on this and they too are small groups of developers with a big, public following who are more than happy to try out new things. Of course, this is again more work than you NEED to do in the first place. Just use stock firmware!

17 JeeBee August 9, 2010 at 7:12 PM

Darn, dropped my Hero and broke the screen with 10 months to go on my contract. The £160 refurb Hero on Three looks a good option when the LCD+touch assembly is £63 on eBay on its own. Expensive spare battery and charger, I know…

18 Martin August 9, 2010 at 9:19 PM

I just received System Upgrade 3.32.405.2 (5.87MB) on my HTC Hero. I have an unbranded model and I am located in Denmark.

Apparently, the update includes “G-Sensor Calibration tool.”

19 Pip August 10, 2010 at 12:16 PM

I got the below back from the geniuses at Three when I wrote them a steaming email:

I’m sorry you had to write about the software update for your HTC Hero phone. I understand you’re upset as we haven’t released it.

At the moment, we don’t have the Android version 2.1. I understand it’s annoying that you have to wait for some more time for the release of this software version. However, let me assure you that we’re working on it and hope to have this on our network soon.

We’ve submitted the Android 2.1 software to Google and we’re expecting them to approve the release for HTC Hero phones in the next two weeks. Once this is done, we’ll put the details on our website

I appreciate your patience while we’re trying to sort this out. You can tell us what you thought about how we handled this by doing a quick survey – call us on 02030941503. We’d love to hear from you, and we’ll use your feedback to help improve the way we do things.

If you have any more questions, please give us a ring on 333 (free) from your Three mobile or on 0843 373 3333 (national rate) from another phone – we’ll be happy to help.

26 cashmang August 16, 2010 at 8:56 AM

Nope i have nothing either >_>

27 JeeBee August 16, 2010 at 11:16 AM

Nowt here @1115 … how does an OTA update work? Does the phone check for the update (restart?) or is a message pushed to the phone to update?

28 marc August 16, 2010 at 11:36 AM

It may be unrelated but this morning, just before I started work at 6am, my phone did a random restart.

29 Stu Alsford August 16, 2010 at 12:30 PM

I don’t have a three Hero, but this worked on the Ornage ones – put the date 2weeks/a month ahead – this should force your phone to check. Maybe this will help?

30 cashmang August 16, 2010 at 12:37 PM

Nope its not there as yet, i checked a few minutes ago with the old date trick

31 Pip August 16, 2010 at 12:51 PM

Anyone fancy rounding up a posse? You’ve had your chance Three and you’ve blown it again…

32 Ryan August 16, 2010 at 12:53 PM

I’m the stupid one for actually believing it this time

33 allee August 16, 2010 at 1:59 PM

Still nothing…!

34 Davis August 16, 2010 at 2:57 PM

Nope no update yet.

35 WigglePig August 16, 2010 at 3:38 PM

I have ages still to go on my contract :(

It’s a. shame as their 3g network is so good but their support ……

40 Steve August 17, 2010 at 10:04 AM

My HTC on 3 died yesterday late on, I left it off and charged it, turned it on this morning and now I have a yellow exclamation mark in a triangle above a picture of the phone, seems from other forums it’s something to do with an OTA update, I’ll research some more and come back… is it true that as a nearly 40 year old man I can actually get excited by the prospect of a firmware update on a mobile phone? How has this become important? Do aliens exist?

41 JeeBee August 17, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Still nothing – just tried the date trick.

I thought it was with Google, not HTC.

43 Porrohman August 17, 2010 at 12:59 PM

You are a shambles of a company!!

45 Stu Alsford August 17, 2010 at 2:59 PM

@Pip, @JeeBee

it goes…

HTC -> Google -> HTC -> Three -> HTC -> Google -> HTC -> Phone from what I understand after dealing with Orange in regards to this. if it has now gone from Google Back to HTC, looks like it may not be long – but I don’t want to get your guys hopes up – All I hope is that 3 haven’t bogged it down with extra firmware, even slight changes Ornage put in ended up with me rooting after 2 weeks of living with them :(

I do hope it comes soon – I want a second hero, and 3 have them on the cheapest….

46 pip August 17, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Unlucky 3, i just rooted to villain rom if anyone needs any help doing so drop me a line…

I dont know why but i have started to find all this very funny. No matter how we express our anger or frustration, 3 has simply no affect on them.
It is making me laugh that how gullible are we. Everytime they break a promise and make another one and everytime we believe it.

50 Asif August 18, 2010 at 4:16 AM

LOL@allee I’m with you on this one this is actually sickly funny so I thought id carry on in your vain and email 3 this:

I am writing to express my disgust at the way your (poor) network has handled the firmware upgrade of my handset-the HTC Hero. The firmware has been updated over a month ago on every other network, yet despite repeated promises 3 has yet to release it. It is just a cynical ploy by your silly network to force customers to upgrade to another phone, despite you saying just last year this was the best phone on your network! I have read multiple forum post by your staff dodging the issue and blaming Google or HTC; when are you going to admit your own incompetence has the greatest role to play for us having a phone that doesn’t reach its full potential only on your network, but is doing so on every other network?

I have been a 3 customer for over 4 years now, but this episode has left me pondering which network to swap to once my contract is complete! Please could you suggest a network that actually cares about its customers?!’

Haha ill let you all know who 3 suggest I swap to ;-)

51 JeeBee August 18, 2010 at 12:27 PM

It sadly really sounds like communications issues. The frontline staff have not been told anything, so they just say whatever they can, like “next week”. The people who know – the software engineers, probably knew the timeline all along given their other tasks, but their estimates were never passed along so that customers could get a proper idea of when to expect the update.

For example, Three posted that it would be two weeks after submission to Google. If they had just gone a little further and said what the process was (three -> htc -> google -> htc -> three -> customers) we wouldn’t be complaining so much, because they could update at each stage.

Three need to work massively on getting information to their customers that is vaguely accurate, and then updating customers as to progress instead of fobbing them off with guesses or, worse, trying to upsell them to a desire and NOT LISTENING. I’ve got a Hero, I’ve got 10 months on my contract remaining, just give me the damn software update that you promised me would happen six months ago.

52 Chris August 19, 2010 at 2:01 PM

ROB, i have had the exact same deal when on the phone to three. Some one even called me up to sell me a second mobile (cos its going so well with my first experience with 3 ??!!??) i thought i would ask him about it as he spoke better english than most i have spoken to. He had no idea what i was talking about! No one ever does – and not one of my emails have ever been answered! This is my first experience with three, as so many others i had high hopes. Maybe if one day they finally deliver the upgrade, i may forgive them. Such a shame as i love the phone (appart from the bluetooth problem – cant connect to my in car headset!!!)

53 CraigWolf August 20, 2010 at 12:45 AM

I have been with 3 for years and I have to say I am now totally disgusted. I pay good money for a decent tariff and upgraded to the “Hero” in February of this year. I have had nothing but reception issues and dropped calls from day one. Some bright spark within their upgrade team told me the update was coming in April, hence my eagerness to jump aboard as i’d read good things about Android. We are now halfway through August…No Update!!!
can someone advise me on how I get out of my contract and leave 3 to continue their starry eyed whoring of Iphone 4 and Samsung Galaxy.

The handset manufacturers should think twice before supplying tin pot companies with Android Mobiles as delayed updates seriously ruin the user experience – not being able to use sat nav and other apps because we are still stuck on 1.5 – the whole principle of Open source is undermined by this

54 WigglePig August 20, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Gah, this is getting so boring.

55 Davidis August 20, 2010 at 2:58 PM

That makes it over 2 weeks. what a shock not a word from 3. It’d like they have a reputation for bad communication or not meeting deadlines.

So since this is what we expected don’t hold your breath. Next communication will probably be the 1st of September and will say it will be with us by end of august this year. (yes i got those dates the right way round :) )

56 JeeBee August 20, 2010 at 3:14 PM

To be fair, they have been responding at but the guy doesn’t seem to know what’s going on within Three internally, and doesn’t have the balls to get answers from Three’s development team. He does sound extremely frustrated however.

57 JeeBee August 20, 2010 at 4:53 PM

“No update before the weekend I’m afraid but everything is in place for early next week. We’re aiming for the 24th.”

“@Jeebee et al – Yes it’s full steam ahead for the 24th. I’ll let you decide about the guy that’s got access to Android.”

58 Rob August 22, 2010 at 4:30 AM

CHRIS: RE ROB: Yes one of my reasons for the update is that it will fix the bluetooth problem as every upgrade on other network with the 2.1 update said the bluetooth works fine now since the 2.1 upgrade.
yes I can say a lot of good things about the 3 network like three backing Mobile Termination Rates and 3 and is calling for a
significant cut in the cost of calling mobile phones and 3 is the only network who joined the Campaign is calling for an
end to high Mobile Termination Rates and the other networks will not join and to me seem more selfish then three, I could say a lot of good things about three which makes it stand out from the others but its a shame they let them self s down by vary poor customer service and don’t know how to keep the customer satisfied and well informed, they could have send a email or text or good website information about the 2.1 update for the HTC hero but No! everyone is left in the dark and this is where three are so vary Amateur and need to grow up..

59 Rob August 22, 2010 at 4:49 AM

JeeBee.. You right JeeBee you said: (To be fair, they have been responding) somewhat? but you have to search high and low just to get a little bit of information and its up to us them to read between the lines and maybe with a little bit of luck you might get right information but 9 times out of 10 they try and palm us off with some old cock and ball story.. Thats what I mean by 3 being so vary Amateur…

60 Ryan August 22, 2010 at 9:45 PM

@Rob I think you’ll find it cock and bull!

61 Rob August 23, 2010 at 2:17 AM

@Ryan Well corrected yes cock and bull!

62 Rob August 23, 2010 at 2:25 AM

Just talking to 3 and they said their is no update going out on the 24th and they will not be updating the htc hero, please tell me I’ve been misinformed …

63 Tim August 23, 2010 at 8:55 AM

@Rob – Who did you talk to at 3?

3 have history of not giving their frontline staff correct or up-to-date information and I very much hope this is the case here!

64 Chris August 23, 2010 at 12:10 PM

@Tim, I hope your right, surely after their recent press release they cant just all of a sedden decide that they will no longer do it! Especially seeing as every other network has managed it? I wish you could just speak to some one at 3 that knows what they are on about !!!

65 Ryan August 23, 2010 at 12:30 PM

From 3′s website today

” The Hero update is still on track for release tomorrow and I’m afraid we can’t offer any more details about where the hold-ups have been. Re the other updates we are on track. As Brendan explained we’re keen to make sure all our updates are bug free and the team work hard to achieve this – as a smaller network this sometimes takes longer.”

66 Tim August 23, 2010 at 1:08 PM

From 3′s twitter page:

“@TomHodgson22 All being well the Hero update will be rolled out on Three tomorrow.”

So it looks like this time it could actually happen, lets hope it has been worth the hassle.

67 Chris August 23, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Tim, how do you actually do the update – I’ve read about changing the dates ect, will we need to do that or is it just automatic?

68 Tim August 23, 2010 at 4:25 PM

I just asked a friend on Orange and he said we should just get a notification saying there is an update available to download.

69 asif August 23, 2010 at 5:53 PM

Downloading the update as we speak guys! It’s come through a day earlier than ‘planned’- at last! Will let you know if it works! Just got a message to download the system update!

70 Tim August 23, 2010 at 5:57 PM

I just tried the date trick (setting your calendar forward a month or so) and a notification flashed up saying there is an update available!
Currently downloading!

At last!

71 Jo August 23, 2010 at 6:03 PM

Hey I got the message just now “A system Update is available”
Check the screenshot here.

72 Rob August 23, 2010 at 6:17 PM

A system Update is available now might have to put date 1 month forward ……..
Yes available now………
mine is updating right now on my HTC hero……..

The date trick is all you need to do.
Would reccommend u use wifi though. And update does pause at 2/3 but does not crash.

Is this the full Android 2.1 release?

84 JeeBee August 24, 2010 at 10:50 AM

Was very happy that the update kept all of my app, data and settings.

Working well so far. New android store app is nice. HTC Sense has few changes. Can’t detect any major speed ups (that’s in Android 2.2, and might require an ARM Cortex A8 or better CPU, rather than the ARM11 the Hero has – anyone know?).

It’s a good update….BUT….my HTC Sense doesn’t recognise my Facebook anymore! Can’t link the Facebook Profile Pics in People like I used to! Anyone else had this? The Facebook site has listed it as a fault…
