Reply from HTC...

Hi all.

I emailed HTC with the following yesterday.
As you are aware there's a lot of talk about "lag", and I'm fairly sure HTC Techies are working on software optomization. So "lag" isn't my concern at the moment. There's a few other bugs I've found, and I don't know if you're aware of them.

I've found that the Twitter widget and Peep don't update as they should. I've been running Twidroid for a few days now and that runs perfectly, updating every 5 mins or when I go into the app. Peep seems to need to be nagged to update! It's a shame because I really like the widget & Peep combo.

It's similar with the weather where it'll only update occassionally. But the main annoyance is it can take hours to realise I've changed current location.

And finally the other bug I've found is occassional loss of sync with Facebook, so all my contacts photo's disappear. When I go into Updates & Events it's empty. I'm still logged into Facebook, but I have nothing there. And if I try to re-link a facebook contact to one of my google contacts, all my Facebook friends have gone. With a bit of fiddling around trying to "update now" in the Updates & Events, I've managed to get the link back.

I've seen these bugs mentioned by other people on Twitter, so I'm not concerned it's a problem with my handset. Would be nice to know that HTC are aware or these issues (and probably others), and hopefully working to remedy them.

And their reply
We are aware about a few of the issues you have mentioned and are hoping to have these small quirks ironed out in the next software update, doughnut V1.7 which is due for release at some point this quarter.

With the lag, me and a collegue have found if you turn off the Touch Flo, the device seems to funtion a lot more fluid and less intermittent. If you do not use the Touch Flo as often maybe you could turn this off for now until the update is released.

Thanks for sharing Keef - that's great news!At least HTC is working on a fix.

I've just ordered the G2 Touch through T-Mobile UK and hoping to get hands-on by the end of the week... :D

Hi there. I'm very new to HTC and Android so please forgive any glaring errors on my part. Had my G2 Touch for almost a week now and have noticed the lag etc. What is interesting is that I also have experienced the loss of sync with Facebook. Lost loads of my contact photo's and when I tried to update they did not even appear on the list. In the end I had to import all my sim contacts to phone again in order to sort the problem out. Considering how cool this phone is, it's a minor problem so at least it hasn't detracted from my overall enjoyment.

It's good to know HTC are on the case. Their reply also sheds some light on the Donut/Android 2.0 debate that seems to be causing much disscussion on the internet at the moment. I believe they refered to it as 1.7. Good news that it will be with us soon. It is my understanding that any firmware updates will have to be accessed from HTC rater than T-Mobile as is the case with the G1. This is something to do with the Hero not being a Google Experience phone, as well as the additional tweaking needed to be done by HTC in order to intergrate Donut with the awsome Sense UI.

Anyways. Love my new phone, 18 month with an LG Viewty would make you love a brick, and am lookin forward to what the future holds for this great device.

Cheers
Padstar.

 I had a Viewty as well...in the end it "drowned" so I got an equally poor Nokia N73 to do me till my contract was due for renewal.

I think the way I got my Facebook sync back was to run an update in the "updates & events" in People. I seem to remember all my stuff came back after that. Might just be coincidence.

Will try when it happens again. It's happened twice to me...V annoying.

Lol, I'm another ex-Viewty user too! Only used it for a few months before I got the Nokia N82 instead (one of my favourite phones!)

The Viewty nearly put me off touchscreen phones for good, but I've recently been playing with a Samsung i8910 Omnia HD. That also has a capacitive screen (like the Hero) but no multi-touch. It seems that Symbian S60 is just somewhat behind the curve when it comes to UI too. The HTC Sense seems a class ahead.

Well I suppose they'll want you to upgrade your handset at some point to their next latest and greatest...
