Well it seems as if a few guides have appeared on how to root your HTC Hero / T-Mobile G2 Touch. I've not used an Android phone before, but it seems that the benefits of getting root access opens the ability to use homebrew apps and other utilities. The guides I've come across are as below:

Has anyone tried this? If so, was it easy to do?

I tried the xda-developers link, and works fine, my phone is rooted now

There's apparently an easier way of doing it in one click, we posted on this yesterday.

What are the advantages of Rooting then?

Any negatives? Risks etc?

Can you revert to non-rooted? (for instance if you had a problem and had to return it to T-mobile/Orange)
